Go-Devils Thump Yellow Jackets (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 15, 1997 in the Gurdon Times re at the 19 with :21 seconds left. However, Gurdon's Demond Beasley ended the threat by introducing himself to Millican at the 23 as time ran out. The game lasted two hours and two minutes, with this being two hours and two minutes too long for the home team. In looking at the unofficial statistics, Gurdon was flagged seven times for 65 penalty yards. Stamps saw laundry fall five times for 28 yards. The Devils punted twice for a total of 63 yards with no returns. Stamps, though, booted the ball six times for 210 yards (one was a 51 yard kick with lots of roll) and gave up 13 return yards. Gurdon put the ball on the ground three times, but recovered all three fumbles. Two of the fumbles were late in the game. Stamps did not fumble at all. Toland was four of eight in passing for 40 yards, with two being intercepted. The Jackets went to the air seven times, connecting on three for 36 yards, but had four picked off. Gurdon simply owned the turf. The Devils rushed the ball 36 times for 283 yards. On the other side of the ball, Stamps had 33 rushing attempts for a scant 39 total yards. Jacket runners were nailed behind the line of scrimmage on 10 different occasions, including twice on sacks. This gave Gurdon a total of 323 yards in the game, while Stamps managed 75. Charles carried 11 times for 107 yards, while the KW ran seven times for 67 yards. Hughes had nine carries for 47 yards, while Adrian Meeks had three carries for 24 yards. Myram Mitchell ran twice for five yards, while Toland had two carries for a minus one yard. Griffin carried once for three yards with Gatlin gaining 31 yards on his carry. The Devils had 18 first downs, with Stamps managing but six. Checking other 7A-West games, Murfreesboro stomped a mudhole in Dierks 42-13. Neither Mineral Springs nor Horatio played defense in their contest with the Hornets posting a 56-40 win in the scorefest. Foreman had all it wanted and then some with Lewisville, but handed the Red Devils a 7-6 loss. The standings show Mineral Springs on top with a 3-1 league record and a 4-1-1 overall mark. Foreman is next at 2-1, 2-3, by way of the alphabet. Gurdon is tied for second with a 2-1 league mark but is 5-1 overall. Next in the race for second is Murfreesboro at 2-1, 3-3, with Stamps at 2-1, 3-3 as well. Dierks has a 1-2 league mark and is 2-4 overall. Horatio's record is identical to Dierks's at 1-2, 2-4. Lewisville brings up the rear at 0-4, 0-6. According to the stats, Gurdon's defense is the stingiest of all in the 7A West league. While the Devil offense has put 122 points on the board, the defense had only allowed 50 -- with Mineral Springs scoring 21 of those and Prescott adding 22. The Hornets, on the other hand have scored 190 and allowed 122; Foreman has given up more points than it's scored at 78 and 143. The Rattlers are the closest to Gurdon as they have scored 124 and allowed 94. Stamps has scored 143, but given up 153 points, while Dierks has only put 83 points on the board and given 140 up with its porous defense. Horatio has scored 179 as the offensive leader, but the Lion defense has seen 209 scored against it. Lewisville, on the other hand, has only managed to put 68 points on the board, while giving up 179. The Red Devils will have their hands full Friday night, as Lewisville makes the trip to Gurdon's Gus Brown Field. The Devils will be appropriately fired up for this game as it is their homecoming. Homecoming festivities will be held before the game at 7 p.m., with kickoff slated for 7:30. The way Gurdon has been playing on both sides of the ball, the score is expected to be extremely one-sided for the home team. Other games in the league show Dierks at Horatio; Mineral Springs at Foreman and Stamps venturing to Murfreesboro. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
