Gurdons Pee Wee Team 3rdBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 15, 1997 in the Gurdon Times By JOHN MILLER Gurdon's pee wee football team, last week, played for its finishing spot of the regular season. The First State Bank purple team had a date, Tuesday, Oct. 7, with Arkadelphia's blue bunch. Each team had identical 2-1 records. The game got off to a quick start with the Arkadelphia team scoring first and making the two-point conversion. On the following kickoff Gurdon had good field position. This was enhanced further when Hunter Johnson took the first snap from scrimmage and raced to the Blue end zone from about 50 yards out. Gurdon's try for two was not successful and the purple clad warriors trailed 8-6. This was the only scoring Gurdon's offense would do for the remainder of the game, as the Blue defense played well. However, the Blue offense found the going tough as well, but managed to score again before halftime to lead 14-6 as the conversion failed. Second half action found the Gurdon offense completely stymied and unable to break anything loose. On the other hand, the blue team was able to put two more touchdowns on the board and posted a 28-6 win. But, this was the first year for Gurdon to field a pee wee football team. And, this crew of fighters finished in third place for the regular season out of five teams. They saw post season action Tuesday night, with the championship game scheduled for Oct. 21, at Arkadelphia's Feaster Park. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
