Prescott Defeats Fountain Lake; Homecoming Is FridayPublished Wednesday, October 22, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesOnly one more conference win and the Prescott Curley Wolves will be going to the state play-offs, howbeit in fourth place. The Curley Wolves had the easiest game of the season Friday night as they defeated Fountain Lake 42-15 in their second conference win. Prescott has lost to Nashville and De Queen, two of the toughest teams in the conference. The third toughest, Fordyce, has beaten both Nashville and De Queen. Fordyce is first in the conference with no losses, followed by Nashville and De Queen, then Prescott. The top four teams in the conference will be in the play-offs beginning November 14. If Prescott remains fourth, the Curley Wolves will have to travel to the team winner of the 5A North Conference, probably Beebe. But that's a start. Prescott has had a tough schedule this year, and the team has come close to winning several more, although they have only won the two conference games. The Curley Wolves almost defeated Class AAA Ashdown and Hope in the first two games. They came fairly close to spoiling Gurdon's homecoming. And against Nashville the outcome could have been different. At De Queen the Wolves came within two points of winning. In any of the games, just a tilt of the scales could have made a difference. Now, with a 5-2 record, the Wolves should have a couple of easy victories before confronting the Redbugs at Fordyce in their last conference game. This week the Curley Wolves will host the Junction City Dragons in their last home game of the season. A big homecoming celebration should be on tap for the Curley Wolves, although the Dragons have been known to throw an upset or two in the past. Next week's game at Fouke has been moved from Friday to Thursday night, because of Halloween night on the regular playing date. The request by Fouke was gladly accepted by the Prescott coaches. This should be another victory for the Curley Wolves, and an important one at that because of the conference race. Of course the last game - against Fordyce - is always on Thursday night since players and coaches from both schools relish deer hunting on opening day, the second Saturday of November, and no one wants Friday nights to alter those plans. Who knows? One of those close games may turn into a victory at the right time and upset the Redbugs. Friday night's action looked disappointing in the beginning. On the kick-off, a return by Terry Woodley was fumbled to the Cobras. However, on third down, Douglas Flenory interecepted a pass from Fountain Lake quarterback Kris Keen to give the ball back to the Curley Wolves. Woodley rushed for eight yards on the first play with Carlos getting the first down at the 38 on the second play. Heath Duke picked up 18 yards on the next carry, getting the first down at the Cobras' 44-yard line. Al Johnston then pitched back to Calvin Flemons, who ran a sweep to the left. Getting clear of the defenders, he quickly out-distanced everyone to the goal line for the first score. The extra point try by Mike Fountain made the score 7-0 with 9:04 left in the first period. Prescott's second touchdown came just a little over three minutes later. Fountain Lake had to punt on fourth and four with Prescott getting the downed ball at the Cobras' 46. Once more Woodley got the first call, getting three yards on the carry. On second down, Duke gained another three to the 40-yard line. Then Flemons picked up six for the first down. On first down from the Fountain Lake 34, Johnston connected with Jason Morrow for the first of three touchdowns by Johnston to Morrow. A bad snap for the PAT kept the score at 13-0 with 5:52 left in the quarter. Fountain Lake came striking back, though. From the Prescott 47, on secnd and 10, Josh Scrimshire broke several tackles and headed for the goal lie. Only a flying tackle (literally) by Woodley kept him out of the end zone. But on the next play, from the one, Keen went over for the TD. The kick by Bill Godbold made the score 13-7 with 3:02 left in the first period, still time for Prescott to score again. A penalty against the Cobras on the following kick-off put the ball in play for the Curley Wolves at their 35-yard line. Woodley got the first call again, but a clipping penalty nullified his run and moved the ball back to the 17. Johnston then went to the air for the second time during the game, completing the pass to Ben Jones for 45-yard gainer. Woodley again got the ball on first down, and again it was a sweep, this time to the right and getting a good block from Van Hook, which let him escape the defenders for the TD. Van Hook got the two-point conversion for the score to go to 21-7 with 2:29 still left in the quarter. The quarter ended with Fountain Lake moving against Prescott. The Cobras managed to get to the Prescott 18 before Keen was sacked by Andrew Fellows for a nine-yard loss. Then Morrow sacked Keen on the next play for a 20-yard loss, bringing up a punting situation. After a 20-yard run-back by Flenory on the punt, Prescott took over on their 40. A pass intended for Fountain fell incomplete, but the sweep had worked all night for the Curley Wolves, and coach David Bennett went with it again. It was Woodley again, and it was good enough for 12 yards and a first down. Prescott's next first down came on a pass play with a pass interference call against the Cobras. It was scoring time again. From the Fountain Lake 33, Van Hook gained four yards; a pass intended for Flenory fell incomplete; then Johnston was sacked for a 15-yard loss. The team, however, still had the needed confidence and determination and, from the Cobras' 44, Johnston connected with Morrow again for the touchdown with 6:18 left in the half. The point after try by Fountain was good to make the score 28-7. Fountain Lake made one first down before having to punt to the Wolves. This time the scoring drive would begin at the Prescott 24. Johnston went back to pass, but had to escape a rush by the Cobra defense. Getting to the outside, Johnston made it to the Fountain Lake 42 before he was stopped. Van Hook rushed to the 12 before he was stopped, but a clipping call set the ball back at the 31, still good enough for a first down. From the shotgun, Johnston connected with Morrow again, but short of a TD by one yard. Van Hook got the TD on the next play with Fountain adding the extra point to make the score 35-7 with only 1:33 left in the half. Fountain Lake took the second half kick and made one first down before Prescott got the ball on a turnover on downs. Woodley again got the first play and picked up three yards, then Van Hook rushed 14 yards for the first down at the Fountain Lake 36. Van Hook gained five yards on the next p Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
