Grandparents Program To BeginPublished Wednesday, August 25, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneMany volunteer grandparents will be returning to school with the elementary students in August. The America Reads program is focused on the goal that every child will be able to read by the end of the third grade in school. Emmet Elementary School will be starting the volunteer grandparents program for the first time this year. Nevada Elementary School has begun in August with returning volunteers reading with the students in grades one through three. New volunteers will be joining those who supported the program last year. Prescott Elementary School will be supported again by returning volunteers and new grandparents eager to listen to a child read for success. The SWADC Learning Center to which AmeriCorps VISTA, Betty Turner, was assigned last September to be the sponsor of the volunteer program that involves the community in the success of the local school. Turner will be replaced in September by a newly assigned VISTA, who will be working in the learning center. Turner will assist, working as a volunteer. Reading is vital to success. Reinforcement of the skill of reading is done when the grandparent listens to the child read in a one to one setting. You can be an important figure in a young child's learning by listening to him read aloud once a week.
