From GMSPublished Wednesday, November 5, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesRed Ribbon Week came to a close with a big say at GMS. The Student Council conducted their assembly with a costume contest. Each home room selected three of their favorite constumes, and them they narrowed it to one to represent each home room. The finalists from each grade were judged until there were only one, and the final was selected by the judges. April Morgan, a seventh grader, was selected as the winner, dressed as Miss Fay. The higlight of the Assembly was the special guest, Matt Mosler of Channel 7's Day Break. Matt talked with the students, posed for pictures and signed his autoggraph many times from the students. Other judges were very special to us also, Jessica Rainey, Home Coming Queen, Adrianne Porcelli, Miss Forest Festival, Rachelle Reece, Miss Clark County, and second runner-up Kimberly Robertson. These are students at Gurdon High School. Citizen students were recognized at the assembly with certificates presented by Jamie Warren and Jill Plyler. There students were: 5th grader, Jordan Purifoy; 6th grader, Heather Drake; 7th grader, Jake Plyler; and 8th grader, Steven Burris. Several students in Mrs. Clingan's home room performed a very special rendition of "Midnight Ride of Paul Revere", as they did a song and dance routine they designed themselves. A super job. The faculty had a delicious pot luck for lunch, which allowed the teachers to talk with Matt and enjoy his visit. Following the delicious food and visitation, everyone assembled in the gym for the final program for the week. the Student Council officers and representatives had the Red Chain arranged in a large circle on the gym floor and Matt went to various places in the chain to break it and find out who won the prizes. Several merchants had given prizes for the winners. Matt talked to the students of how important it is to keep your life free of drugs. He talked to them in such a way that they could not help but understand the importance of saying no to drugs. Matt's visit was enjoyed by all and we hope to have him back again soon. Mr. Bearden had a Haunted House in the Science room with a lot of goblins going to be "frightened" by the Unknown. Lots of fun was enjoyed by those attending. Mrs. Clark was really a big help in the assembly, as she allowed several of the Student Council members to miss her class so they could help get the stage ready, chain links stapled to gether, and so many other things they helped with. A big thank you to Mrs. Clark. Of couse, those students will make up any work that they missed. Mrs. Franklin did a super job in the planning and the following through of the Red Ribbon Week. We really appreciate all of her hard work. Mrs. Clingan won a beautiful tree given by Mike McKenize for the wearing of the Red Ribbon each day. She was so excited about winning, that she sang "with happiness". Her singing however didn't make Mrs. McBride happy, as she put Mrs. Clingan in D-Hall for five days for singing in the hall, but Mr. Alexander put her in D-Hall for 20 days for "trying" to sing in the hall. Now, isn't that a shame. As D-Hall is being served by Mrs. Clingan, the rest of the faculty and students will remain busy making those Classy Moments at GMS.
