Biddle Is Essay WinnerPublished Wednesday, November 5, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneSara Biddle, a sixth grade winner of an essay contest at Nevada Elementary, shows her sphinx that she did as a social studies project. The students also did an essay on the Great Pyramids. Hers was the winning essay. It follows. This is a report and project on the Great Pyramids of Egypt. A pyramid is a four sided triangularly shaped quadrilateral that comes to a point, and there are also two types of pyramids. The categories are size, usage and location. The first category is size. The structure of this wonder of the ancient world is magnificent. The time it took to build this wonder was 20 years and involved as many as 100,000 workers and used up a lot of Egypt's resources. Each block used in the making of this wonder weighed 2.5 tons. To build this pyramid it took a total of 2,300,000 blocks for the whole thing. The workers added 285 blocks each day. The second category is usage. The ancient Egyptians used these pyramids as a sort of tomb for dead pharaohs. They would put expensive belongings in with him. They also put food, water, clothing, and shelter along with a few non-valuables. They thought that if they put their pharaoh in a tomb he would come back in the afterlife. The third category is location. The Great Pyramids of Egypt are located by the Nile River in Egypt's Sahara Desert. It is important to know where The Great Pyramids are, how they were built, and what they were used for. It is also important that we know this because it is a wonder of the ancient world.
