Maude Elizabeth McNielPublished Wednesday, November 5, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneMaude Elizabeth McDaniel McNiel, 73, of Georgia died October 23, 1997, in her home after a long bout with lung cancer. Mrs. McNiel was born July 5, 1924, in Prescott to Emma Edwards and Hugh McDaniel. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Loise Swafford, of Wichita, Kans. Survivors include her husband, William H. McNiel; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Nimrod Long III of Birmingham, Ala., and Martha and Edouard Stelling III of Atlanta, Ga., and six grandchildren. Many residents of Nevada County will remember Mrs. McNiel's mother, Emma Edwards McDaniel, as a lifetime resident of Prescott, who managed the gift department of Prescott Hardware until the age of 84 and who retired to College Park, where she recently died at the age of 102. Mrs. McNiel graduated from Prescott High School, where she was an honor student, a cheerleader and the editor of the school paper. She attended Henderson State University. She worked at Southwest Proving Ground in Hope during World War II. At the conclusing of the war, she went to Atlanta to visit a friend,decided towork there for a while, met her husband-to-be and remained there. She often returned to Prescott for high school and Proving Ground reunions. She retained close ties wtih friends of this area. Mrs. McNiel actively partricipated in activites outside her home. Included were Sunday school teacher, PTA leadership, director of a nursing home, and a founder of a successful knit shop. She was keenly interested in business affairs and she was a charter member of two individual investment clubs. Her principal hobbies were golf, gardening and a participant in several bridge clubs. She was buried in the City Cemetery in Fairburn, Ga., alongside her mother. In liew of flowers, the family suggested that contributions be made to College Park First United Methodist Church, 3726 E.
