PHS Routs Fouke; To Face Fordyce Thursday (cont)

Published Wednesday, November 5, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

On Fouke's next possession, an interference call against Prescott gave the Panthers a first down at their 44, but on fourth and 11, the Panthers had to punt once more. Prescott took over on their own 21.

Johnston went back to pass on first down, but he was pursued. He escaped several tacklers and ran for the first down to the 48 before he was stopped.

On the next play, a bad snap to him in the shotgun position had him running up the middle and he gained three yards on the play. Johnston then connected with Andrew Fellows at the 13, but Fellows was not stopped until he reached the two.

Van Hook went through the middle for the touchdown. Ben Jones missed the point after for the score to remain 44-0 with 5:06 left in the third period.

Four times during the game, Fouke was stopped short of a first down with Prescott taking over offensively. The third time for near the end of the third period. However, Prescott - working with players from the bench - had to do the same early in the fourth period, on its next possession.

Fouke's fourth time was immediately following this and Prescott was ready to score again behind back-up quarterback Jordan.

Woodley ran a sweep on first play, but he was stopped after only one yard. Coach Bennett then sent Johnston in as a wide receiver. Johnston took the pass around the 40 between a couple of defenders and broke away for the touchdown. Van Hook kicked the extra point to make the score 51- 0.

Fouke made a first down on its next possession, but on first and 10 from the 48, the ball was fumbled and it had to be chased down with Fountain getting the recovery for the Curley Wolves at the Fouke 30.

Woodley lost a yard on the first play, then Flenory rushed for seven on a sweep. On third down, Jones gained one yard on a sweep and then Fountain picked up the first down at the Fouke 19.

Again, Flenory went on the sweep play, this time out-distancing all tacklers and getting the final TD of the game. The PAT by Jones was good to make the final score 58-0 with 3:42 left in the game.

Fouke lost another fumble on its next possession, and Prescott had moved the ball down to the Panthers' 33 as time ran out.

The Wolves need the support of their fans in Fordyce Thursday night. Win or lose, the Curley Wolves will be playing in the play-offs next week.

The way its looks now, the game will be against the Beebe Badgers at Beebe. And, the way the Curley Wolves have been playing, they may be able to see more play-off action than it appeared at the beginning of the season.

A lot of improvement has been seen on the team and maybe it will help them this week and next. It takes a lot of determination, and the team has a lot more of that at the present time.

As a reminder of the games that have been lost this season, the Curley Wolves almost, but nearly won several of those. Meaning that the Wolves may not be as bad as their record shows. The defense has just not been strong enough. Outside of that, they're great.
