Blue Jays Defeat Saratoga; Other Squads Sweep DogsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 12, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Footballs haven't stopped flying yet and basketballs have already begun in the area. The BlueJays of Nevada High School already have a 4-1 record on the season and posted an impressive 68-60 win over Saratoga, Monday, Nov. 3 at NHS. The Jay got off to a slow start as the Bulldogs posted an 18-6 lead by the end of the first period. The second quarter saw the Nevada five battle back and go into the locker room down 28-21. Period three was a fairly even contest, with neither team able to gain much of an advantage over the other. When the buzzer sounded to end the stanza, the 'Dogs were up 42-31. Nevada went on a scoring binge in the fourth quarter, putting 37 points on the board, literally hitting from everywhere on the floor. In fact, the Jays sank 11 free throws in the period, while tossing in a trio of three-pointers. All other scoring was done inside the arc. Julius Gulley led the charge for Nevada with 23 points, including two threes. He was followed by Mike Lowe, who netted a dozen points. From the stripe, the Jays were 14 of 20. Derek Scott led the charge for the 'Dogs with 15 points, while teammates Luke Bradley and Rangy Taylor each tossed in a baker's dozen. Saratoga was 15 of 19 in free throw attempts. LADY JAYS 40 LADY DOGS 37 The Lady Jays led off with their 40-37 win over Saratoga's senior girls, running their record to 3-1 on the young season. Saratoga jumped out to a 17-3 lead at the end of one, only to see the Lady Jays rally in the second to cut the score to 24-21. The home team took the lead in the third 27-26 and held on during the final period for the win. Shiheta Henry led the way for Nevada with 13 points, while Ramona Evans stoked the nets for 11. Free throws could have made a difference in the game had either team shot well from the charity stripe. Nevada was four of 11, while Saratoga was three of 11. The Lady Dogs were led by Chandra Carey's 11 points. This was followed by Sharika Vaughn's nine. JUNIOR LADY JAYS 37 JUNIOR LADY DOGS 32 The sweep began with the junior girls posting a 37-32 win over their counterparts from Saratoga. It also proved to be prophetic as the junior girls got off to a slow start and trailed 10-9 at the end of one. By halftime, though, the junior Lady Jays had rallied to take a 20-13 lead and never looked back. When the third quarter ended, Nevada was up 27-16 and cruised to victory. Jenifer Harding was the big gun for Nevada with 20 points. Saratoga was led by Tierra Thomas's 11. The Lady Jays were hot at the stripe as they netted 70 percent of their free throws in sinking seven of 10. The Lady Dogs hit six of 20.
