UA President Releases Information To Huckabee

Published Wednesday, November 12, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

Dr. Alan Sugg, president of the University of Arkansas, has presented Gov. Mike Huckabee with information on all relevant contracts and grants from institutions within the Universtiy of Arkansas system.

Colleges and universities in the system are the Unviersity of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Pine Bluff, Monticello and Little Rock; the Universtiy of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Little Rock; the Universtiy of Arkansas community College at Hope; Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas at Helena; and Gateway Technical College at Batesville.

The disclosure by Sugg was consistent with the disclosures made by executive branch agencies following an order from the governor.

Colleges and universities were not included in the executive order that was issued by the governor to state department heads.

Huckabee applauded the voluntary submission by Sugg of the contracts and grants.

"I appreciate Dr. Sugg coming forward voluntarily with the grants and contracts from the Universtiy of Arkansas system," the governor said. "This type of commitment from Dr. Sugg and the system is consistent with our policy of open government and cooperation. It is our hope that other colleges and universities will do the same."

Lu Hardin, director of the state Department of Higher Education, also applauded Sugg's disclosure. Hardin said the staff of the Department of Higher Education would be available to assist colleges and universities in answering questions on grants and contracts and gathering relevant data.

Information provided by Sugg will be reviewed by Bill Hardin, the former FBI agent hired by Huckabee to review grants, contracts, purchase agreements, lease agreements and personal service agreements.
