Booklet For Peak Flow Meters Ready

A free illustrated booklet describing the use of peak flow meters and a brochure on home control of allergies and asthma is being offered from the American Lung Association of Arkansas as part of its annual Christmas Seal Campaign.

The brochure on home control of allergies and asthma discusses asthma and allergy triggers, such as pets, tobacco smoke, dust mites and polen. The brochure also suggests ways to control these triggers and general rules to help control the home environment.

The booklet, `Facts About Peak Flow Meters,' illustrates the simple device a child blows into to measure airflow from their lungs, giving an early warning sign if a breathing problem is developing.

The information features the best way to use a peak flow readings.

AThe American Lung Association urges parents and their child with moderate to severe asthma to use a peka flow meter daily,@ says Dr. Martin Fiser, an asthma/allergy specialist and Lung Associatin volunteer.

AIt's an easy way to monitor the child's breathing on a daily basis and determine what kinds of activ- ities they can take part in,@ he said. AThe peak flow meter cn also be used by teachers, coaches and school nurses to help a child with asthma,@ Fiser added.

AThe best way to figure out how a child with asthma is doing is by using a peak flow meter at home, recording the readings and then reviewing the information with your doctor,@ Dr. Fiser stated.

Peak flow meters are made of durable plastic and are easy to use. If you are interested in purchasing a peak flow meter, consult your local physician to work with you in getting one.
