From GMSPublished Wednesday, December 3, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesAfter being out of school for several days, we are ready to get back to work. From what I am hearing everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and the turkey was not the only thing that goes gobble gobble! We do appreciate the board approving the three days off for the holiday, as it gave us the opportunity to have more time with family members. Tuesday was a busy day for us. We had basketball games between seventh and eighth grades, and a team that allowed Mr. Alexander to play on, which brought a lot of entertainment and fun for us all. Following the games, the ?human hot dog,? better known as Mr. Alexander, took his place as promised. He had promised the students that everyone who increased his test score from last year would be allowed to put hot dog ingredients on the ?human hot dog.? Mr. Alexander was well prepared, as he entered the gym wearing a bright yellow two-piece rain suit, snorkel, and goggles, and took his place in a special ?bun,? better known as a child?s swimming pool. Then the real fun began! Students squirted mustard, ketchup, poured relish, chili, sauerkraut and onions on the favorite hot dog of the day. This might be something we need to do more often. The GMS Student Council Assembly was conducted in the afternoon. The citizen students were recognized by Jessie Smith, Heath Griffin, and Davion Williams. They were Brant Wells of the fifth grade; Triska McCray of the sixth grade; Kanonna Berry of the seventh grade; and Norris Glenn of the eighth grade. The teachers of the month are Mrs. Bullard, and Mrs. Blanton. Our sincere congratulations to all the winners. The assembly was really a talent show. GMS has so much talent, it will take two programs to give the students the opportunity to perform those talents. Therefore, December will be another time for talent to be performed and shared. Katie Barbaree had students standing as they applauded her songs, Christina Daniels held the audience spell bound with her song. Lacey Jester seemed to have stunned the audience as she sang ?Yankee Doodle? without opening her mouth, and several other students danced and sang. It was a fun afternoon. We look forward to the December assembly. Several of the teachers drew names for ?secret Santas,? which is a lot of guessing fun! We were so glad to see Mrs. Downey back to ?work? with us. She has been greatly missed and now ready to get back into the routine. Mrs. Ferguson has been fantastic in handling the classes for Mrs. Downey. We will miss her, but extend an open door welcome anytime she can come by for a visit. A pleasant visit with Mrs. Middleton was enjoyed over the holidays The good news was that she is feeling real good, looks great! She really paid a high compliment to us, as she buys a Gurdon Times each Thursday just to read Classy Moments. Now, that?s better than an academy award. Mrs. Middleton made such a difference in the lives of hundreds of students who she had in her classes. We are always glad to hear from her. We will be busy as we study, learn, and of course have some homework to do before we get out for the Christmas holidays. Just continue to share your concern for us as we make those Classy Moments at GMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
