Wolverettes Hammer Lady Hornets 72-38BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 23, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune During the majority of the first quarter the Prescott Wolverettes were anything but sharp as they tangled with the Blevins Lady Hornets. The girls appeared to be sluggish and not on top of their game. This allowed the Lady Hornets to stay close early. With two minutes gone in the period, the score was tied at 5-5. The problem appeared to be the Wolverettes were just slightly out of sync. Still, by the time the final buzzer sounded, Prescott's senior girls went home with a 72-38 win. Prescott's usual spark seemed to be missing in the initial frame as Blevins took a 7-6 lead with 2:21 left. However, the Wolverettes woke up and went on a 9-2 run for the remainder of the period. From there on out, it was typical Wolverette ball. The real team showed up in the second period, firing bullet passes along with bombs, scoring almost at will. But, the Wolverette players paid a price for their skills as the Lady Hornets were unsure which sport was being played. Early speculation was a hockey game was going on as the Blevins girls literally hammered the Wolverettes. Andrea Cossey was repeatedly knocked to the floor because of the extremely physical play. What Blevins apparently didn't realize, though, is the Wolverettes are a sturdy and hardy group of girls. Whatever punishment the Lady Hornets dished out, the Wolverettes made up with points. At the 4:49 mark Prescott was in the bonus and led 24-11. Cossey did a good imitation of Steve Young tossing touchdown passes to Jerry Rice as she would find Traci Graham deep in Blevins territory for easy baskets. With 1:37 left in the first half, Prescott led 32-14 and Coach Bill Cossey was clearing his bench. Halftime came with Prescott leading 34-18. The situation didn't improve for Blevins in the third quarter, as the Wolverettes went on a tear. Any pass a Lady Hornet threw of more than three feet was either tipped away or picked off as Prescott filled the lanes and flashed to the basketball. The only problem Prescott experienced in the third quarter was the loss of Stacy Stockton, who sat out most of the period with three fouls. Her presence, though, wasn't missed too much as those players on the floor decimated Blevins. Prescott would cut, slash, flash, dish, drive and score against the Lady Hornet defense, which had given them some trouble in the first period. The third ended with Prescott comfortably in command 59-26. Stockton made a brief appearance early in the fourth quarter, but returned to the bench, along with the rest of the starters as Coach Cossey got everyone in the game. With 6:30 in the game, Cossey sent in a fresh five with the Wolverettes in command 66- 27. The subs have been listening to their coach about looking off their passes. This confused Blevins as the Wolverettes would pass opposite of where they glanced. The Prescott bench also had a good time in the final stanza as they cheered their teammates on. The Lady Hornets kept their starters in against the Prescott subs, but this was mainly because of a seriously short bench. Blevins only had nine players dressed out, and one left in the first half with an ankle injury. Still, each time one of Prescott's subs would score, the home bench would erupt with shouts of encouragement. Both Prescott senior teams will return to the home court for the Prescott Holiday Classic Dec. 28-30. On the boys side of the bracket teams from Bradley, Lakeside, Hatfield, Blevins and Nashville will pay Prescott a visit. These same girls teams will also vie for the title in the double-elimination contest. Action will begin with girls play as Bradley and Hatfield tangle at 3:00 p.m. Monday. This game will be followed at 4:20 with the Bradley and Hatfield boys taking center court. Next up will be the Wolverettes locking horns with the Lakeside Lady Rams at 5:40, with the final game of the night between Blevins and Lakeside as the senior boys close out the contest at 7 o'clock. Tuesday's games begin at 2:20 p.m. in senior boys play with the loser of the Bradley- Hatfield game taking on the loser of the Blevins-Lakeside contest. This will be followed at 3:30 p.m. with the loser of the Prescott-Lakeside senior girls outing, taking on the loser of the Bradley-Hatfield battle in the consolation bracket. Nashville's senior boys will hit the court for the first time at 5 o'clock Tuesday against the winner of the Blevins-Lakeside affair. Prescott's Curley Wolves will be the nightcap at 7:40, as they host the Bradley-Hatfield victor. The final games in the classic will be held Wednesday, starting at 4 p.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
