Published Wednesday, February 4, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune

Register now and join hundreds of runners in an effort to help Arkansans breathe easier.

The American Lung Association's first annual Lung Run half-marathon will be held Saturday, February 28, at 8:00 a.m. in downtown Little Rock and surrounding areas and will also feature a wheelchair half-marathon and 5K fun run/walk.

The race will begin at Little Rock's River Market area, move into North Little Rock passing the Riverfront Parks, come back into Little Rock and head down Cantrell Avenue to Riverfront Road before returning to Cantrell.

The course will go on to include sites such as Union Station, the State Capitol and the Governor's Mansion before finishing back at the River Market.

Held in downtown Little Rock, there's something for the whole family to enjoy including shops, eateries, the River Market, the Old State House and Arkansas' Territorial Restoration.

Following the race and 5K, enjoy food, entertainment, door prizes and awards.

"Funds raised in the Lung Run will be used to help the 250,000 Arkansans suffering with incurable lung disease by providing medical research and educational programs," Lloyd Moore, volunteer chairman for the Lung Run, said. "This event is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a great race and contribute to a worthwhile cause."

Programs supported through donations include Asthma In-Services, Asthma Camp and Open Airways For Schools, designed to help asthmatic children, their parents, teachers or day care personnel better manage the disease.

Other programs include High School Heroes and Healthy Lungs Month which educate school children about the dangers of tobacco use and how to deal with peer pressure.

The Lung Run is sanctioned by the RRCA and was accepted on the Grand Prix Series of Races. All events will be fully supported with aid stations, medical support and security.

Entry fees required for all events are $20 for registrations postmarked through February 23, and $30 for late and "day of" registrations.

Contact the American Lung Association of Arkansas at 1-800-880-5864 to register. Race pockets may be picked up Monday, February 23, through Thursday, February 26, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday, February 27, from 8:00 a.m until 7:30 p.m. at the American Lung Association office, located at 211 Natural Resources Drive in Little Rock.
