COMPLETE LOSS This home in the Upchurch community was a complete loss Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, as fire consumed the frame structure. The house was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Gulley. Volunteer fire departments from Laneburg and Redland responded to the call, but were unable to save the structure. According to Bill Almand, Laneburg fire chief, arson is not suspected, as the members of the family thought they smelled something they believed to be electrical in nature in the back of the house. The Rosston Volunteer Fire Department responded to a mobile home fire on New Year's Eve, returning shortly after New Year's Day began. A trailer owned by Steven Dean caught fire Dec. 31, 1997, with crews called back out at 12:20 a.m. Jan. 1, 1998. According to former Rosston Fire Chief Jim Cross, the trailer was a total loss. Sunday, Jan. 4, the Willisville VFD responded to a mobile home fire, but were unable to save it either. Billy Ray Earnest resided in the trailer at Willisville.
