Military NewsPublished Wednesday, October 27, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneNavy Airman Carlos Welch, son of Ivory and Kay Currey, of Prescott is one of more than 370,000 active duty sailors celebrating the navy's 224th birthday this month. Welch is currently forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. The U.S. Navy was created by the Continental Congress on October 13, 1775, after George Washington appealed for its formation. Since then the navy has been involved in all our nation's conflicts, from the Revolutionary War to Desert Storm, and sailors continue to serve the nation today, on ships and at bases around the world. Every October 13 Sailors marked the date as a time for ceremony and reflect on deeds of the men and woman who previously served and has given today's sailors their legacy of honor, courage and commitment. Carriers like the USS Kitty Hawk are forward deployed around the world to maintain a U.S. presence and provide rapid response in times of crisis. They serve as a highly visible deterrent to would-be aggressors and, if deterrence fails, offer the most versatile and powerful weapons available, including NATO Sea Sparrow missiles and tactical aircraft. The 1997 graduate of Prescott High School joined the navy in July 1997. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
