Gurdon Man KilledPublished Wednesday, January 14, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesA two-vehicle accident Tuesday morning, Jan. 6, left a 21-year-old Gurdon man dead. According to reports from the Arkansas State Police, Johnny Ray Hooks was traveling west on Arkansas state highway 24 at 4:48 a.m. when the 1995 Nissan he was driving was struck head on by an 18-wheeler driven by Joseph Garrett, 34, of Camden. Hooks was pronounced dead at the scene by Ouachita County Coroner Sam McCord. Garrett, though, was uninjured in the accident. Apparently, the tractor-trailer rig driven by Garrett crossed over the center line into Hooks' path. Officers from the ASP and Ouachita County Sheriff's Office, along with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Ouachita County Office of Emergency Services and Camden Fire Department worked more than six hours to clear the wreckage and completely reopen the highway. Garrett was cited for driving left of center. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
