DeQueen Whips PHSBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 14, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's senior girls lost their first conference game of the season Tuesday, Jan. 6. However, the Wolverettes were on the road with the trip taking them to DeQueen, where the only good thing that can happen is leaving and coming home. The Lady Leopards managed to put a 70-61 win on the board and mar Prescott's perfect, t ill then, record in league play. Now, the Wolverettes are 13-4 overall and 3-1 in 7AA action. Prescott started the game well, taking a 17-12 lead into the second period and holding a slim 27-26 advantage at the break. But, playing in DeQueen is never an easy task. Fouls plagued the Wolverettes, who saw members of the Lady Leopards take 21 free throws, while making only eight. On the other hand, the Wolverettes went to the stripe a scant eight times, canning five of the freebies. Disparities in free throws and foul calls are typical at DeQueen. The third quarter saw the home team take the lead for good, as they were able to outscore Prescott 27-16, and held the Wolverettes off in the final eight minutes. Andrea Cossey scorched the nets from beyond the arc with 25 points in the game and six treys in the contest. Stacy Stockton had her normally solid game with 15 points, while Traci Graham contributed another 14 to her stats. Julie Tollett led all scorers with 27 points. Katey Stearns followed with 16 for DeQueen, while Sarah Reeves had 12 and Brittany Chandler scored 10. The Wolverettes will have plenty of time to think about revenge before the Lady Leopards venture to Prescott. The rematch isn't scheduled until Feb. 10, the final conference game of the season for Prescott's teams. When DeQueen makes the 90-mile trip to Prescott, it'll be Katy bar the door, as the Wolverettes will be sure and exact their pound of flesh for the loss. CHAMPS AGAIN Prescott's Wolverette basketball team proved to be the best on the court at the Southwest Arkansas Invitational Tournament with a convincing 73-32 win over arch-rival Gurdon. The Saratoga tournament is one of the best invitationals in southwest Arkansas, as several of the top teams from the region meet to see who can go home with bragging rights. This is the second consecutive year the Wolverettes have managed to return to Prescott with the trophy. MIRACULOUS ESCAPE Tina Egger, 18, of Prescott escaped serious injury Thursday, Jan. 8, when the 1990 Chrysler Eagle she was driving hydroplaned, flipped and landed upside down in a creek. According to reports from the Arkansas State Police, she was traveling south on Highway 67 when she hit a puddle on the road, causing the vehicle to leave the road and strike the embuttment of a bridge. The car then spun with the rear hitting the concrete pillar, resulting in it becoming airborne, flying for some 20 feet, before landing and rolling four times. The car came to rest upside down in a creek on 67 near Emmet. She was able to get out of the car and swim to safety. Eggar was bruised, but not seriously injured. No citations were issued in the accident, but the car was totaled out. REPAIRING DAMAGE Crews with Entergy, and the Nevada County Road Department had their work cut out for them Tuesday, Jan. 6, as they scrambled to clear roads and restore utilities to homes in the Rosston area after severe weather hit Monday night. There were reports of hail falling along with winds in excess of 75 miles per hour. Trees were uprooted and sprawled across the road, while power lines were knocked down by limbs. Some houses sustained damage, but no one was injured. OUTTATHEWAY Prescott's Stacy Stockton drives around a member of the Mineral Springs Lady Hornets during the Southwest Arkansas Invitational Basketball Tournament in Saratoga last week. The Wolverettes not only whipped the Lady Hornets, making use of a 31 point third quarter, they brought home yet another piece of hardware to add to their growing collection. HERE, CATCH Nevada's Ramona Evans dove to try and keep the ball in play when the Lady Jays tangled with the Lady Bulldogs of Saratoga in the Southwest Arkansas Invitational Tournament last week. In spite of her efforts, though, the Lady Jays fell 63-62 and were eliminated from the tourney. YOU GOT IT This Blevins player appears to be tossing the basketball to Prescott Curley Wolf Matt Brannon during their game in the Southwest Arkansas Invitational Tournament last week in Saratoga. The Wolves had several chances to win the game, but were unable to buy a basket when they most needed one. Blevins won 53-50, but was eliminated in their next outing by the eventual champs, Gurdon.
