Nevada Squads Split Conference Games in Action At StephensBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 21, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune Stephens proved to be a bad place for the Nevada Blue Jays to visit, Friday, Jan. 16. The Roadrunners sent the Jays packing with an 83-51 conference loss. The Jays were able to hang with the Roadrunners for the first period, as they trailed 18-12, but an offensive spurt in the second eight minute frame saw the host team pull to a 38-18 advantage. Playing catchup is hard to do, but is double tough against Stephens. Period three ended with the Jays on the short end of a 65-37 score. Julius Gulley paced the Jays with 19 points, while teammate Courtney Mixon contributed 12. Stephens had five players in double figures. Kenneth Jones was the high scorer in the contest with 25. Antonio Glover stroked the cords for 15, while the duo of Reggie Todd and Brandon Glover each scored a baker's dozen. Michael Marsh was the final Roadrunner in double figures with 10. For once, free throws didn't have much of an effect on the outcome. Stephens connected on 19 of 25, while the Jays were four of seven. LADY JAYS 57 LADY RUNNERS 53 Nevada's senior girls managed to trip up the Lady Roadrunners in their battle, with a 57-53 final score. Ramona Evans spent most of the first quarter at the charity stripe, as she was fouled repeatedly. In fact, of the 12 points the Lady Jays scored in the first frame, six came from Evans' free throws. She went to the line 13 times in the contest, connecting on 11 shots. Stephens finished the period with 11 points. The Lady Jays were able to maintain their lead in the second period, which ended with a 25-24 score. Neither team went to the free throw line in the second quarter. This changed in the third frame, with Evans taking three shots and scoring all but four of the 15 points Nevada put on the board in the period. The Lady Jays were able to put a bit more daylight between themselves and Stephens at 40-37. The final period took a good deal longer to complete as the Lady Jays camped at the charity stripe. The team shot a total of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter, hitting seven. Stephens players took 12 free throw shots themselves, but only hit five in the frame. Evans led all scorers in the game and was all but unstoppable as she poured in 31 points. Shiheta Henry polished the rim for 12 points. Disheika Perchia led the Lady Roadrunners with 24 points, with Amber Jackson tossing in another 13 for the cause. The Lady Jays finished the game by hitting 16 of 26 free throw attempts. Stephens players connected on nine of 15 shots from the line. JR. LADY JAYS 21 JR. LADY RUNNERS 43 Stephens's junior girls got the night underway with a 43-21 win over Nevada's junior squad. The junior Roadrunners opened with a 7-1 lead in the first period, extending this to a 17-10 halftime advantage. The situation for Nevada didn't improve in the second half, as the Lady Runners posted a 31-14 lead at the end of three. Jenifer Harding led the Lady Jays with 11 points. Stephens was led by Bridget Smith's 26. The Lady Jays were seven of 13 from the stripe, while Stephens was 12 of 24 in free throw attempts. LADY JAYS 49 MAGNOLIA 38 On Tuesday, Jan. 13, the Lady Jays humbled the Lady Panthers 49-38. Nevada opened with a 12-8 lead at the end of one, and held a 24-18 halftime advantage. The Lady Jays stretched their lead to double figures in the third as they were up 37-27 when the final eight minutes began. Evans was again the leading scorer as she scorched the nylons for 25. Henry again followed with 12. Jackie House and Alexis Madison were the only others to score, and each had six. Magnolia was paced by Courtney Ray who scored 12 points. Jennifer Stromme was next with 11, while Aime Forst had 10. Few free throw attempts were made by either team, but Nevada was three of five, while Magnolia was one of eight. JR. LADY JAYS 18 LADYKITTENS 41 Hope's junior teams were quite poor hosts on Thursday, Jan. 15, as the Ladykittens dumped the junior Lady Jays 41-18. Offense was the problem for Nevada early, as the Lady Jays simply couldn't score in the first period. On the other hand, the Ladykittens posted 10 points. By halftime, the Hope crew held a 20-4 lead and had its offense in overdrive. Period three ended with the Lady Jays trailing 32-10. Harding was Nevada's leading scorer with eight points. Ronetha Pearson was next with six. Roberts led Hope with 10. The Lady Jays were 0-4 from the free throw line, while the Ladykittens shot 50 percent at seven of 14. JR. JAYS 46 BOBKITTENS 38 The junior Blue Jays were able to gain a measure of revenge for their female counterparts with a 46-38 win against the Bobkittens. The Jays took a 10-9 lead at the end of one, but wound up trailing 20-14 when the buzzer sounded ending the first half of play. This didn't matter, as Nevada rallied to take control of the contest in the third period, which ended with the Jays up 31-30. Ricco Holliman was the leading scorer for Nevada with 13. Johnathan House stroked the nylons for 11, while Geoffrey Box contributed 10 in the win. Free throws were important in this contest as the Jays were nine of 13, while Hope was 0-5. On December 19, Emmet Elementary G/T put on the play "A Story Book Christmas."
