Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, January 28, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

This has really been a busy week for us at GMS. The Close-Up program will sponsor a dance for the Gurdon Middle School students Thursday, January 29, in the gym. From 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. will be for the fifth and sixth graders, and from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. will be for the seventh and eighth graders.

The Student Council will present a program for the primary students in the middle school gym Friday, January 30, at 9:00 a.m. This is a program through the Bureau of Lectures. Acrotumbling will enter-tain the students with various techniques of tumbling and stress the importance of staying physically and mentally fit. Middle school students will be able to see the program at 10:00 a.m. We look forward to this presentation. Citizen students will be recognized at this time, as there will not be a separate assembly this month.

The basketball "shoot out" for Easter Seals was conducted Thursday. Only nine students took part in this, but they are busy collecting the pledges made to them. Patrick Haynie made the most baskets with 78 in a three-minute time limit. Ms. Hatley made 93, but she was just "Showing how easy it can be." We appreciate Ms. Hatley, Mrs. McBride, Lyndi Escalante, Stephanie Kilts, Keiko Meeks, and Mrs. Clingan for helping with this project. Nolan Richardson, Uni-versity of Arkansas basketball coach, is the chairman for this event.

Students enjoyed a junior class follies presentation and then a Close-Up follies. We were able to enjoy talent of many students from GHS, as well as from former GHS graduates. The "Sister Act" that was performed at the Close-Up Follies was made up of teachers, and if you missed their performance, words cannot describe what you missed. The good "Sisters" were Martha Thomas, Susan Norris, Van Williams, Linda Bullard, Ann Clingan, and director Sandra Hitt, with Marshall Porcellie at the piano.

Mrs. Clingan's seventh grade Arkansas history students are busy making scrapbooks, so if you are asked about any Arkansas information please have patience with them, as they are working hard to meed the scrapbook due date of February 24.

Again let me stress that we appreciate your interest and your support in our school as we continue to make Classy Moments at GMS.
