Blevins High School Students Are Honored (cont)Published Wednesday, January 28, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayuneth 15 points for Prescott, while Andrea Cossey nailed a quartet of three-pointers en route to her 14 point outing. Crystal Cross and JoEllen Holt led Fordyce with six each. The Wolverettes were 10 of 14 at the line, while the Lady 'Bugs were seven of 13. "It wasn't much of a game," Cossey said. "We let them back in. They'd played us tough here and I was a little scared going over there, but our defense was good again." He said when Fordyce missed shots early on, they had no second chance for more attempts as the Wolverettes were making full use of the Windex they had to clean the glass. In addition, the game was much closer because Cossey cleared his bench, while Fordyce kept more experienced players in the game late. This runs Prescott's record to 17-4 overall and 7-1 in 7AA conference action. WOLVERETTES 62 BISMARCK 43 Bismarck's Lady Lions didn't learn much from their first game against Prescott. In their initial meeting of the year, Bismarck used a triangle-two defense, thus leaving Stacy Stockton alone to score. Stockton scored 32 in the game. On Tuesday, Jan. 13, the Lady Lions again went to the triangle-two and left Stockton alone to run rampant along the baseline. She scored 20 in this contest. The Wolverettes opened with a 17-9 lead in the first period, stretching this to a 32-19 advantage at the half. And, when Stockton wasn't killing the Lady Lions inside, Cossey was bombing long-range shots from beyond the arc, where she connected on five treys, as she scored 22 in the game. The third period saw the Wolverettes continue their domination of the Bismarck five as they posted a 48-26 lead. However, the triangle-two defense was further decimated by Graham, who netted another 15, as Bismarck was unable to shut down anyone. Weatherford paced the Lady Lions with 18, while McKim added 12. The Wolverettes were 10 of 15 from the line, with their hosts converting 11 of 19 at the stripe. PRESCOTT 50 NASHVILLE 43 Anytime Prescott can make the trip to Nashville and come home with a win, it's a good night. The Wolverettes escaped the Lady Scrappers 50-43 Friday, Jan. 16. The game was close at the close of the first quarter with Prescott holding a slender 7-6 lead. However, the Wolverettes were able to put some daylight between themselves and the Lady Scrappers at the half with a 25-19 score. Prescott stretched its lead to 10 when the buzzer sounded ending the third quarter, with the score 37-27. Stockton led the assault for Prescott with 26 points, while Cossey netted 12, including two treys. Porter led Nashville with 15, while Falcinelli scored 11. The Wolverettes converted nine of 16 free throws, while Nashville was three of seven at the line. PRESCOTT 58 FOUKE 46 On Tuesday, Jan. 20, the Wolverettes made the trip to Fouke, where the Lady Panthers did their level best to keep the game slowed down. It didn't work as the Wolverettes posted a 58-46 win on the road. The Lady Panthers managed to keep the game close in the first period with the score 17-16 in favor of Prescott. But, the second quarter saw the Wolverettes open the game up a little with a 34- 26 halftime lead. Solid defense in the third period allowed Prescott to further extend their lead as they only allowed Fouke to score four points in the frame, which ended with the score 44-30. Cossey paved the way for the win with 17 points overall, including five more three pointers for her statistics. Stockton followed with an even dozen, wile Graham stroked the nets for 11. Jessica Hendrix stepped up inside to score nine. Carla Heigle led Fouke with 13, while Amanda Hardin and Jones scored 12 each. The Wolverettes were 15 of 23 at the line, with their hosts converting three of six free throws. Coach Cossey said the team was a little sluggish from being on the road so much this season (they've only had four home games), but should benefit from having most of a week off as there was no game Tuesday night. Once January ends, however, the Prescott teams will be able to recover from their highway fever as they will have four consecutive games at home in February, and will host the district tournament. Friday night, however, Prescott takes to the road again as they travel to Fountain Lake. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
