SAU Students Visit NYPublished Wednesday, October 27, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneA group of 14 business students from Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia recently got a closer look at the world of finances than most textbooks provide. The group from SAU toured several financial institutions in New York City, which proved to be a great learning experience for everyone involved. The trip was sponsored by the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) at SAU and also included students in the investments course at the university. Darlene Tickle, instructor of business and faculty advisor to SIFE, and Lisa Toms, instructor of marketing, accompanied the students on the trip. "It was an awesome trip," said Tickle. "Some of our students had cultural experiences they had never had before. Everyone had a great time." The group toured such business institutions as the United Nations Building, Wall Street, the Fed and the New York Stock Exchange. The students were also treated to tours of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Metropolitan Museum and China Town. "In macro-economics we have a whole chapter on the Fed. Now these students have a mental picture they can place with that knowledge," said Tickle. April Cummings, a senior business administration-management major from Stamps and president of SIFE, agreed that the experience was a good one. "We got a better understanding of every place we visited, especially the Stock Exchange and the Fed," said Cummings. "Seeing these places in person really gives us a better understanding." Students participating in the trip included Traci Hughes of Prescott, a senior business administration-finance major. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
