Pee Wee Ball BeginsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 11, 1998 in the Gurdon Times Even though the Gurdon Go-Devils and Lady Devils are still fighting it out on the hardwood, pee wee basketball has begun in Gurdon. During the 7A Central District Tournament, pee wee teams will be taking to the court at the Gurdon High School gymnasium. Monday, Feb. 16, the third and fourth grade girls will take center stage. The team coached by Wanda Cornish will tangle with Lavinia Young's crew. On the boys side, Karen Harper's team will lock horns with Lori Ann Green's squad. Tuesday, Feb. 17, fifth grade girls action pits Larry White's team against one fielded by Debbie Powell. In third and fourth grade boys play, Mike McKenzie's battalion will meet the assault force headed by Winford Burton. Thursday, Feb. 18, for third and fourth grade girls, Cornish's battlers will meet Eddie Harper's bunch, while, for sixth grade boys, David William's squad faces Deonco Houston's. Saturday, Feb. 19, action will kick off with third and fourth grade girls taking to the floor. Karen Harper's team will meet the McKenzie group, while in sixth grade girls play, Tiger Griffin's bunch has a date with the team fielded by Dennis Pruitt. All games are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Admission will be $3 for all games each night. CASH FOR SCORING The First State Bank of Gurdon donated Gurdon High School $25 for every touchdown the Go-Devils scored and interception madeduring football season in 1997. This money, divided between the football team, band and cheerleaders, amounted to $725. John French, FSB president, is shown presenting one of three checks to Coach John Pace. Cena Clark, cheerleader sponsor, far left, also got a check, while GHS Principal Leonard Gill accepted the band's check. GREAT MINDS These students with the Gurdon Middle School earned "credit cards" for having good grades during the past nine weeks. Of course, the good grades were all A's. The students can use the credit cards to make purchases at the school store. DONATION MADE Charles Cabe, representing the Horace C. Cabe Foundation, presented a check for $150,000 to Gurdon Primary School Principal Rita Roe to be used for the construction of a physical education building and new furniture for the cafeteria. Also shown with Cabe and Roe are: Abby Smith, Jeremy Hammons, Holly Eggar, Kendal Young and Danaris Villanueva. TOP STUDENTS Gurdon High School students of the month for February are: senior Natasha Harper, junior Jennifer Kuhn (not shown), sophomore Cindy Davis; and freshman Oliver Webster.
