Gurdon's senior boys maintained their number one status in Class A basketball, but, more importantly, won the conference outright Tuesday night with a 60-50 win over Genoa Central.

The Devils needed the win to clinch the 7A Central title and get a free ride in the district tourney to the finals, thereby assuring themselves a trip the regional tournament at Center Point Feb. 23-28.

The Dragons were able to slow Gurdon's attack in the game, and keep the contest relatively close.

At the end of one, Gurdon led 12-8, pushing this to a 30-23 halftime lead, as Genoa refused to go away.

The Devils added 14 more in the third quarter, while the Dragons responded with 15 to cut the score to 44-38.

Adrian Meeks led the Devils with 17 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Corey Marsh followed with 16, while Eric Hatley netted 12, including going four of six at the line in the final stanza.

Coy Mason led all scorers in the game with 25 for Genoa. Justin McMurry added 11.

The Devils were 10 of 16 at the charity stripe, while Genoa converted five of eight at the line.

GURDON 94

BLEVINS 83

Gurdon had no answer for Blevins' Marcell Johnson, as he stung the Devils for 46 Friday night, but Gurdon managed to post a 94-83 win during the track meet.

From the opening tip, the game was up and down the court, with neither defense stopping the other.

Blevins opened the game with a 21-20 lead at the end of one and held a halftime advantage of 48-40.

Trailing at the half is something relatively new to Gurdon and something the Devils simply do not like.

Gurdon came out firing in the third quarter, as the Devils nailed a trio of three-pointers in the period to go along with the other 20 points the team scored as Gurdon defense took control 69- 56.

However, the race wasn't over as the Devils had to continue their onslaught in the final eight minutes because the pesky Hornets refused to give in.

Five members of the Devil brigade broke the double figure barrier. Meeks was the leading scorer for Gurdon with 27 points. Hatley stung the Hornets for 22, while Antonio Gatlin, Terry Cornish and Chauncey Charles all scored 10 each.

Aside from Johnson, Blevins had little offense. Nick McClure, though, managed to help the cause with 18.

Gurdon converted 16 of 31 free throws, while Blevins was 18 of 28 at the line.
