Watch For Improper Solicitations

Published Wednesday, February 11, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune

This is the time of year when people receive requests from groups for volunteers to go door to door and collect money for cancer causes.

The public should be advised that many of these mailouts may not be from ligitimate organizations, according the American Cancer Society (ACS). If you receive anything through the mail re-questing that you go door to door to collect money, ACS reminds you to look at it carefully. Many organ-izations have logos similar to the American Cancer Society.

The symbol of the ACS is a red sword. No other organization can use this symbol.

The Nevada School Unit of the American Cancer Society always conducts its door to door campaign in April.

A person you know will contact you by phone or in person and will deliver a collection packet to you personally during the campaign in two months.

The American Cancer Society does mail out requests for donations. However, the return postmark will be Little Rock. If you receive requests and feel uneasy about it call 1- 800-227-2345. Locally, you may call Lanora Dalrymple at 887-3752 or Phyllis Stewart at 887-5972.

When you give to the American Cancer Society only 18% is used for fund-raising and management, while 82% of the money goes to patient services, professional education, public education, research and community services.
