Nevada Squads Win At Homecoming

A swarthy group of pirates invaded Nevada High School's homecoming Friday night.

These buccaneers had intentions of plundering the bounty held by the Blue Jays, but saw their foes more than prepared.

The 'bucs of Emerson were sent back to sea with no booty to show for their efforts, but plenty of bruises as they were soundly beaten by the Jays, 49-28.

The game was played at a snail's pace as the Pirates held the ball, working it around the horn for the best shot.

Nevada's senior boys operated the 2-3 zone to near perfection, forcing Emerson to fire their volleys from beyond the arc.

The first points weren't scored in the contest until the 4:38 mark when the Jays nailed a deuce on a driving layup.

Emerson answered with a three-point bomb in an effort to soften the Nevada defense.

The opening period ended with the 'bucs leading 6-4.

The Jays opened their offense in the second frame, while the defense was all but impenetrable. Nevada began reading the Pirate press better on offense and used the pass to break it.

In fact, Nevada played so well the Jays outscored the 'Bucs 14-2 in the quarter.

The Jay defense rattled Emerson's offense to the point the Pirates literally threw the ball into the stands on several occasions.

Nevada's faster pace began finding holes in the 'Buc defense, allowing the Jays easier access to the bucket.

Period three opened with Nevada wasting no time in scoring as the Jays sent a trey through the strings.

The Pirates continued to play the slow game and refused to push the ball downcourt. This served to make the Jays impatient on offense, but never bothered the defense shown.

Both teams were able to score more, Nevada inside and Emerson from beyond the arc. The third quarter ended with the Jays in command 37-23.

As the game entered the final eight minutes, the 'Bucs began to pick up the pace. However, it was a case of too little, too late as Emerson's players couldn't change gears quick enough to get back in the game.

The Nevada defense continued to sparkle, allowing the visiting Pirates only five points in the fourth quarter.

Julius Gulley paved the way for the sinking of Emerson with 12 points.

J. Copeland was the Pirate offense with 18.

Nevada shot lights out at the free throw line, netting seven of eight attempts. Emerson did reasonably well with six of 10.

NEVADA 64

BRADLEY 70

The Jays began the week by getting off on the wrong foot against Bradley's Bears, losing the game 70-64.

The Jays were able to hang with the Bears, but didn't have the horses they needed at the end.

Bradley opened red hot by taking a 23-15 lead at the end of one as Greg Davis was unstoppable in scoring 15 in the frame himself.

The Jays fought back in the second quarter as they took a 31-29 lead at the break.

Both squads played even in the third frame, with Bradley battling back to tie the game at 50-50.

The final eight minutes, however, saw the Bears live at the charity stripe, as Bradley shot 14 free throws in the period, converting 11 and holding off the Jay attack.

Overall, Nevada was five of nine at the stripe, while Bradley was 24 of 34.

Kevin Marlar led the Jay assault forces with 17 points. Sam Evans followed by stroking the nets for 16. Julius Gulley was the third member of the team in double figures with 14.

Davis was the game's leading scorer as he scorched the nylons for 34 points. Artis Edwards was next with 19.

LADY JAYS 49

EMERSON 37

The Lady Jays made sure homecoming was perfect by whipping the Lady 'Bucs 49- 37 in the final game of the evening Friday night.

The Lady Jays opened the game with an 8-0 run, as the Nevada quintet was able to work the ball inside with Jackie House and Ramona Evans providing the offensive spark. Emerson fired from outside, unsuccessfully.

The Lady 'Bucs also had problems hanging onto the ball early on and turned it over several times, as they wound up trailing 14-5 at the end of one.

Period two saw more of the same from both teams, as the Lady Jays crashed the boards and cleaned the glass, limiting Emerson to one shot at a time.

Still, Emerson was able to cut the gap to five by halftime, as the score was 24- 19.

Nevada was patient in the third quarter, opening with a successful first shot. Ball handling became a problem for Emerson as the Lady Pirates turned the ball over time and again. This led to Evans getting several shots under the basket and taking advantage of them.

The Lady Jays opened their lead somewhat taking a 40-29 advantage.

Nekina Adair wound up with an ankle injury when Emerson's big girl, F. Spence, knocked her down and fell on her.

Spence was a force inside with her size and bulk, but was clumsy and slow otherwise.

Shortly after the start of the fourth quarter Nevada, leading 40-31, began working the clock.

The Lady Jays did this so well neither team scored again until the 1:57 mark of the game. Most of the points thereafter came from the free throw line.

Evans was the lone Lady Jay in double figures, as she played string music for 17 points.

G. Baker was the game's high scorer with 18.

The Lady Jays converted seven of 13 from the line, while Emerson was four of eight.

LADY JAYS 51

LADY BEARS 88

Nevada found out why Bradley's girls are ranked among the best in the state as they fell 88-51 Tuesday, Jan. 3.

The Lady Bears opened with a 26-7 onslaught of the Lady Jays, and took a 40-18 lead to the locker room at the half.

The second half saw Nevada fight back somewhat, but the Lady Jays couldn't overcome the game's early deficit. At the end of three, Bradley led 64-28.

Evans was again the team's high scorer with 21 points.

Lakeshia Moore, however, warped the iron with her hot shooting as she sent 33 points through the net. Carone Harris was next with 22 points.

Nevada was 10 of 15 from the line, while Bradley was 17 of 33 at the stripe.

JUNIOR LADY JAYS 24

JUNIOR LADY BEARS 51

The sweep began early as Bradley's junior girls squad stopped Nevada 55-24.

While both teams showed consistent scoring throughout the game, the Bradley five consistently scored more than Nevada.

At the end of one, the score was 12-6 Bradley, with the Lady Bears up 23-12 at the break. The third quarter saw Bradley add 18 more to its tally as the Lady Bears took command 41-21.

Jenifer Harding led Nevada with 13 points.

Cassandra Early had the hot hand for Bradley with 26 while teammate Deidre Larry added another 14.

The Lady Jays were four of nine at the stripe, while Bradley was a woeful seven of 21.
