4-H Outdoor Volunteers Wanted

Published Wednesday, February 11, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune

4-H has a new way for adults to heed the call of the great outdoors by becoming an Arkansas 4-H Master Backpacker/Outdoor Skills volunteer.

"This is a great way for volunteers across the state interested in backpacking, hiking and devel-oping outdoor skills to enhance their appreciation for the out-of-doors," Mike Klumpp, 4-H program specialist for outdoor education and camping, says.

"This is also an opportunity for adults to work with youth, and other adults and volunteers," he said.

4-H is offering training May 7, 8 and 9 at the C.A. Vines Arkansas 4-H Center.

The cost will be about $60, and includes training, program supplies, materials, lodging and meals. The application deadline is April 1.

Participants will learn a broad range of skills, including equipment selection, cooking outdoors, navi-gation, health and fitness, safety and how to work with youth and young adults.

"This training encompasses several of our basic 4-H projects," Klumpp says. "In addition, participants will be provided with information and training on the steps necessary to successfully start a 4-H Outdoor Adventure Project Club."

Those taking part in the program must be recommended by a county Extension agent, take part in 16 to 20 hours of training to be certified, and work with local agents to develop plans for Master Volunteer fitting into the overall 4-H program.

Participants must also volunteer to teach at least two workshops involving other volunteers in the first six months of training, offer training to other local clubs or countywide project groups, keep records on the numbers of individuals trained and follow up on the program at the end of six months and at yearly intervals to determine program impact.
