Challenge Issued To Fight Pollution

Published Wednesday, February 18, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune

The American Lung Association of Arkansas challenges the public to fight air pollution and lung disease by participating in the seventh annual Clean Air Challenge Bike Tour.

The bike tour will take place on May 2 and 3 from Little Rock to Hot Springs and back and will feature different length options.

Riders may choose from a one-day, 60- or 100-mile event, in addition to the traditional two-day, 120-mile tour and a new two-day, 200-mile option.

"Everyone can make a difference in the fight for cleaner air," Mark Taylor, a volunteer for the American Lung Association, said. "Air pollution contributes to lung disease, which affect 250,000 Arkansans. The Clean Air Challenge is the perfect opportunity for people to enjoy themselves while becoming involved and better informed about the Lung Association's programs and services."

The tour is a fun and scenic ride that will appeal to anyone who enjoys cycling. All food is provided for each cyclist, including lodging at the beautiful Majestic Hotel overnight in Hot Springs.

Rest stops, set up every 10 to 12 miles along the route, will be stocked with fresh fruit, high energy snacks, water and other refreshments. Cyclists are fully supported by a staff of trained volunteers, communications experts, SAGs, massage therapists, medical and law enforcement support. After a good night's rest, cyclists will ride back to Little Rock where a celebration awaits.

Each year the Clean Air Challenge includes the support of the business community in the fight for clean air.

"We love to see companies become involved in the fight against lung disease by sponsoring the Clean Air Challenge or even forming a team of riders. It's a wonderful morale-building opportunity for employees," Phil Perry, special events coordinator for the American Lung Association, said.

A team consists of three or more cyclists and is able to qualify for special prizes. The team raising the most money will be awarded the championship trophy. Other prizes will be awarded for top individual fund-raisers.

Besides participating in the Clean Air Challenge, the Lung Association advises individuals to fight air pollution by taking action in the following areas:

  • Drive less, ride a bike, walk or take mass transit when possible;

  • Practice energy conservation to reduce air pollution;

  • Be certain your indoor air is clean at home and work; and it

  • Supports clean air regulations and enforcement.
