Nevada County Picayune and Gurdon Times Newspaper Archive |
Bluff CityJerry McKelvyPublished Wednesday, October 27, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune It's getting about time for that first killing frost, so we had better keep an ear tuned to the weather if we want to harvest those late tomatoes. The woods have been pretty thick with hunters lately, and the deer are not quite as brave as they were a few weeks ago. I've seen several that have been hit by cars lately. Be careful when driving. Hitting a deer could really ruin your day. Linda and Bill Carmen attended Linda's high school reunion and reported a good time. I received a July issue of the Picayune last week only three months late. How's that for an efficient postal system. It's time to catch up on things that happened in this area during the month of October in the years past. About the only thing I have recorded is that the Bluff City Fire Department building was completed in October of 1978. Here is a list of some people who were closely connected to this area who passed away during the month of October in the last 30 years: Sonya Lynn Nelson (1971); Eva Dell Henry (1973); Joyce Cummings (1975); Carl Greer (1978); Gladys Nelson (1982); Tom Barlow (1987); Myrtle Moore (1992) and Jesse Barlow (1996). Last week's thought was printed on the Internet edition, but was missing from the regular paper, so I'll repeat it this week: 'One of the good things about growing old is that wrinkles don't hurt.'
