Classey Moments

Published Wednesday, February 18, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

We really enjoyed our long weekend, but it is always nice to get back into our routine. We had such a wonderful time giving and receiving Valentines, candy, balloons and flowers that we could become "spoiled" very easily.

Several students and teachers were entertained with beautiful songs provided by Mrs. Hitt and her high school chorus. Thanks for a job well done and come back real soon.

The Gurdon Middle School Stu-dent Council assembly Thursday, February 12, was enjoyed by the student body. Citizen students for February were announced by a teacher from each grade. Mrs. Green, fifth grade teacher, announced that Monica Shults was very deserving for the Citizen student for the fifth grade. Mrs. Whitlock, sixth grade teacher, was very pleased to have Brandon Finely come forward to receive the certificate for the sixth grade. Mrs. Clark, seventh grade teacher, anxiously awaited Kelly Runyan to accept the Citizen student honors for the seventh grade, while Ms. Hatley, eighth grade teacher, called for Carrie Gibson to take the honor for the eighth grade.

Faculty and staff members for February are Virginia Giles, Brandy Prince and Mrs. Smithey. They were selected by Mr. Alexander drawing names from a container, as it would be very difficult to select the most outstanding in any other fashion.

The Citizen students and the faculty and staff members of the month are treated to a Pizza luncheon with Mr. Alexander, which is a great treat to look forward to the Pizza lunch that is.

The GMS royalty was announced at the assembly. The fifth grade candidates, Taylor Pace and Taylor Moorehead were crowned GMS Queen and King for 1997-98 by Anita Cabe. Crown bearers were Kimberly Hunter and Sonia (Sally) Beasley. Mrs. Cabe explained to the student body of how important they are to the school as well as to the community. She stressed the importance of doing their best and how important it is to continue to always try to do better. Mrs. Cabe told the students how impressed she was with their behavior and expressed her wishes for them to continue and enjoy the remainder of the school year. She said it was such a privilege for her to be asked to attend the assembly and to be selected the one to crown the King and Queen. We at GMS were the ones who were privileged to have Mrs. Cabe take time from her busy scheduled to spend time with us. We appreciate all she does for our school, as well as for the community. She received a standing ovation from the students.

Other members of royalty were sixth graders Lindette Kadiri and Davion Williams; seventh graders Uthel Gatlin and Sharonda Bell, and eighth graders T'Nesha Burton and Norris Glenn. Votes were made by the students with a penny a vote.

Coach Hatley presented the trophy the junior high girls won at the Bismarck tournament to Mr. Alexander. We are proud of the team and their coach, and hoping we will have another presentation of the trophy from the district tournament.

Jill Plyler, sixth grader and member of the Student Council, wrote, directed and produced a skit about "How to Heal a Broken Heart", that was greatly enjoyed. Members of the skit were Tracy Coplen, Lacey Jester, Bonnie Ferguson, Andi Finley, Heath Griffin, Jamie Smith and Christina Taylor. They performed as though they were professionals and we appreciate them for working together to provide entertainment for the audience.

The Pep Steppers sponsored a dance for the students Thursday night. Several students had ball game commitments and could not attend, but those who did really had a great time. Thanks, Mrs. Butler, for planning the evening for the "dancers".

Can you believe we are in the last half of February and still making Classy Moments at GMS?
