Storms Bypass GurdonBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 18, 1998 in the Gurdon Times Storms ravaged Clark County, but left Gurdon pretty much alone Tuesday night, Feb. 10. The storms brought high winds and torrential rains into Clark County, with the winds ripping trees out of the ground, leaving them across roads in many cases. According to Clark County Judge Grady Runyan, two members of the county road crew were out till after 11 p.m. Tuesday checking the damage. Trees were across roads in the Vaden and Hart Chapel areas, he said, as well as east and south of Arkadelphia. Gurdon Mayor Rick Smith said little damage occurred in the city. Some limbs were down and one tree was felled, but otherwise, Gurdon escaped unscathed. An Arkadelphia resident, though, wasn't as fortunate. Runyan said a tree fell on a house on Third Street because of the winds and rain. Power lines were also blown down and five county roads in the Alpine and Amity area were washed out. "We sustained heavy damage in the west part of the county," he said. "The river was deep under the trestle. We got a lot of rain." Runyan said some bridges were washed out on Graysonya road. Those bridges had only been replaced two months ago. "I guess we were lucky," he said, as the damage could have been worse and there was no loss of life or injuries due to the storm.
