Billing Fee Removed (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 18, 1998 in the Gurdon Times ntergy is one company paying such taxes. Because of the energy company's reduction of fees, the end result will likely be a reduction in revenue for the city down the road. How much it will be and when it will occur are not known yet. The council also approved spending $875 to buy a document feeder for the city's copier machine. This will help speed operations around city hall. Councilman Karen Parker brought up the topic of motorists speeding along Main Street during business hours. She said this could pose a serious hazard to others. This, Smith said, is a common complaint to the GPD. However, the GPD has no radar unit and can't issue tickets and make them stick in court. However, he continued, officers do write tickets for hazardous driving and reckless driving. The idea of a four-way stop sign at Main and Second, or a traffic light, has been discussed. But, Smith said, the Arkansas Highway Commission has stated such measures can't be used as speed breaks. However, Smith will continue discussing the situation with the commission and try to get a member to visit Gurdon and see the problem firsthand. The possibility of purchasing a new radar unit for the GPD has been discussed between Smith and City Marshal David Childres. The cost of such an item will be discussed at the March council meeting, Smith said. In addition to this, the March meeting will also see a public hearing held for the reduction of International Paper Company's bond issue. Smith said the company has the chance to refinance its 1978 bond issue, but must have the council's agreement. The mayor will discuss this with the city's attorney, Taylor King, to make sure Gurdon will not be responsible for repaying any of the bond monies. City Recorder/Treasurer Tambra Smith said businesses in the city of Gurdon need to renew their annual business license as soon as possible. This should be done, she said, as close to Jan. 1, as possible. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
