Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, February 25, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

We enjoyed a very special treat when we were entertained by the Henderson State University Symphony Orchestra, consisting of 50 instruments playing at the precise tone, pitch, timing, direction and everything else it takes to have a performance of such "perfection". Mr. Wimberly had made arrangements for this very special treat for us and we express our appreciation to him for providing the talent we enjoyed.

We can hardly contain Mrs. Downey, as she has been telling us "she has a room in our new building." Now, she doesn't just tell us, but she tells us and tells us, and tells us. (By now you probably get the message.) All kidding aside, we are happy for her and her students.

Mrs. Hargraves surprised Mrs. Clingan with an absolutely beautiful quilted map of the United States that she made with her "own little sore fingers." This will always be a very special addition to Mrs. Clingan's classroom in the new middle school. It is very difficult to just say thank you, but thank you, thank you, Peggy. Work of excellency!

Progress is certainly evident in the construction of our new school, and we are anxious to make the move. We will wait just a little longer, however, just a little longer however, just to give them time to get the roof and inside walls completed.

Scrapbooks. If you just happen to hear that word, it could be that you are listening to the seventh graders of Mrs. Clingan's Arkansas History classes, as they have been busy for six weeks getting items all together for a big project. The students drew a name of a county and in Mrs. Clark's English class they wrote to their county requesting information and waiting patiently (well, most did) for their reply. After four days in the library doing research and complying all their information as required, putting all of it together in the form of a scrapbook, these were turned Tuesday and that gives a certain teacher something to do to keep her busy, as grading each book takes time.

We are certainly proud of Coach Hatley's junior girls basketball team, as they brought home the championship trophy from the district tournament. We had to beg Katrina Simpson to leave it in the office, as it seemed to be cemented to her hands. We are proud of the team and complement the coach.

It was heart breaking when Mrs. Clingan found that someone had taken a green swivel seat stool from her room without asking and it has not been returned. She would appreciate having it returned, as it means a lot to her.

The spelling bee, sponsored by Mrs. Downey, is being conducted this week. We look forward to having the championship remain in our school.

We always have something to do and sometime we allow ourselves to overlook the importance that you are to us. So please remember we need you and we appreciate your support in all that we do. We want this community to be proud of our accomplishments and those Classy Moments at GMS.
