Helping Hands EHC

The Bluff City Helping Hands Extension Homemakers Club met February 12 for its regular meeting with 14 members being present.

The meeting was called to order by the president, Marguerite Tomlin.

Mrs. Betty Perkins was the lucky winner of the door prize.

Ruth Sullivan gave the inspirational thought with these words, "It is so good to be here." She has had surgery on her hands.

Roll call was answered with what to plant in the garden. Tomatoes came in first place, then onions, peppers and purple hull peas.

It's time to plant some things now, but we may have to start with water lilies.

Last month's minutes were read by secretary Laverne Green.

Ruth Sullivan gave the treasurer's report.

The club's no bake sale is coming along good.

Plans are to make another quilt to sell this fall.

Since it was Valentine season, the excitement was so high, gift opening before eating and the program seemed the right thing to do.

Oleta and Kay Nelson gave the program on making bird feeders. Plastic drink bottles and pine cones were used. This is one way to give back to the birds for all the joy we get from watching them.

Potluck was enjoyed by all. Drinks were served by Oleta and Kay Nelson.


Southwest Arkansas Development Council's literacy program has recognized three volunteers for their time, talent and commitment to the adult literacy program as certified tutors. They are, l-r, Linda Guidry, Jo Anne Chunn and Gail Gulley. Free literacy tutoring is available to all adults through this program. The next volunteer tutor training is set for March 13 and 14 on the campus of UACCH in Hope. You must pre- register to attend. For more information, call 887-5536.

MMA athletic director and head football coach Lt. Col. Lonnie Messick, USMC (Ret), left standing, and team offensive coordinator David W. Marshall proudly oversee the event.

The Prescott Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has presented a check of $1,000 to the athletic program in the Prescott School District. Jim Gober, center, athletic director, accepts the funds from VFW Chaplin Derrell Clements, left, and Earnest Robison. On January 27 Clements presented a program to middle school students concerning the American flag. Clements told the fifth graders about what the stars and stripes represent, and the proper respect concerning the flag.
