Speakers Set For Conference

Dr. Stephen Kemp and Dr. Mary Mike Cradock will be the guest speakers at the Spring Diabetes Update held Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Brandon Conference Center, located at 1120 Marshall Street on the Arkansas Children's Hospital campus.

The workshop will assist parents and caregivers in the daily management challenges and coping strategies involved in the care of children with diabetes.

Session topics will include adolescent issues, coping strategies, meal planning, choices and adjustments for insulin therapy and new research. A diabetes product fair will be included in the educational workshop.

The workshop is open to teachers, caregivers and relatives of children with diabetes, the cost of $5 includes lunch and all materials. Free parking with security will be provided. Pre- registration is required by calling (501) 320-1430.

Juvenile, or Type I, Diabetes is the usual type found in children and young adults. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas stops making insulin, which is the substance that allows the body to use food that is eaten. With no insulin, food cannot be used as glucose, and the result is a high sugar level in the blood.

Symptoms of diabetes are: Frequent urination, Frequent drinking of fluids, excessive hunger, weight loss, feeling tired.
