Wolverettes Bounce Back To Defeat Star City

Published Wednesday, March 4, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune

Playing a super game, unlike the day before, the Prescott Wolverettes defeated the Star City Lady Bulldogs to take third place in the Regional Four Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The day before, the Wolverettes lost to Drew Central 75-50.

Star City came out of the tourney in fourth place after losing 67-41 to Prescott.

Prescott and Star City were thrown together after losing Friday in the semi-finals. Prescott lost to Drew Central and Star City lost to De Queen.

In the finals Saturday night, De Queen defeated Drew Central for the top seed from Regional Four.

Prescott will be playing this week in the Class AA State Tournament at Drew Central. If they make it through the semi-finals Saturday, they will play next week in the finals at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.

In Saturday afternoon's conso-lation game, the Wolverettes appeared to be more relaxed than the day before. They found their range offensively and did good on defense as well.

The Wolverettes were able to execute their plays better Saturday than the day before. They kept moving and kept the ball moving, whereas the day before they appeared to be motionless and the ball was taken away from them constantly.

After Prescott defeated De Queen in the regular season the week before the district tourney, the Lady Leopards then went to Fountain Lake the same week and lost to the Lady Cobras, moving the Wolverettes in first place in the conference.

It had been previously reported that Prescott and De Queen were co-champions. (The Wolverettes, however, lost to the Lady Leopards in the district finals with Tracy Graham missing the game because of mononucleosis.)

The point guard was able to play in the tourney last week, however. With her doctor's permission, she played in all three games.

Graham was the game's leading scorer Saturday with 19 points. She sank three 3-pointers, four 2-pointers and she was 2 for 2 from the charity stripe.

Stacy Stockton made a strong run in the fourth quarter, adding icing to the cake with 11 points in that period. She was able to penetrate to successfully shoot her jump shot or for a lay up basket.

She finished with 18 points, hitting six 2-pointers and she made 6 of 9 free throws.

Andrea Cossey scored 12 points for the Wolverettes, hitting two from long range and three 2-pointers.

Others scoring for Prescott were Jessica Hendrix with 8 points; Jeanie Haynie with 3; Mandy Cox, Kamori Scott and Dashawn Fellows with 2 points each; and Jesna Cornelius with 1 point.

Natoya Maddox led Star City with 11 points.

In all, the Wolverettes made 14 of 23 free shots. Star City made 9 of 21 free throws.

By quarters, Prescott led Star City 23-5; 36-19; and 47-23.

WOLVERETTES 72

MCGEHEE 69

Stockton scored heavy against McGehee on Wednesday last week, the Wolverettes' first game of the tourney. She hit nine 2-pointers, one 3-pointer and four of her six free shots to lead Prescott in the 72-69 victory.

Cossey followed with 21 points, hitting six big ones, one 2-pointer and 1 of 2 free shots.

In her first game after the doctor gave her an affirmative nod, Graham hit two 2-pointers, one 3-pointer and she made 4 of her 5 free shots for 11 points.

Hendrix scored 3 points for Prescott and Scott and Cox finished with 2 points apiece.

Scoring in double figures for McGehee were Dominsha Armstrong with 26 points and Katrina Davis with 21.

Prescott hit 10 of 17 free shots while McGehee made 7 of 17.

Prescott was behind 21-11 after the first quarter and 35-24 at halftime. In the third period, the Wolverettes began to close the gap more and were only behind seven points, 52-45, going into the final period.

WOLVERETTES 50

DREW CENTRAL 75

In the semi-finals last Friday afternoon, the Wolverettes stepped out cold, while the Lady Pirates came out hitting everything from any range.

Drew Central hit nine 3-pointers in the game, taking a 75-50 victory over Prescott and throwing the Wolverettes into the losers' bracket.

Stockton scored 17 points and Cossey scored 16 to pace the Prescott senior girls. Stockton hit seven 2-pointers and 3 free shots while Cossey sank four 3-pointers and two 2- pointers.

Scott scored 5 points for Prescott; Graham and Hendrix scored 4 each and Fellows and Cornelius made 2 points each against Drew Central.

Four players were in double figures for the Lady Pirates.

Tremesha Colbert scored 23 points, Ashley Hudson added 18, Crystal Shepherd 14 and Tiffany Chavis scored 12 points to lead the winners.

The Wolverettes attempted 10 free shots and made six. Drew Central was 9 of 10 from the line.
