Lyndia's Fashion Treasury To Open In Prescott March 14

Published Wednesday, March 4, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune

Lyndia's Fashion Treasury, a ladies' clothing store specializing in the latest fashions from markets throughout the country, will open March 14 in Prescott at 221 W. Main. The store will be located in the Bank of Prescott branch building and former Chamber of Commerce office. A ribbon cutting will be at 10 a.m.

The shop is owned by Lyndia Giles Washington, who is originally from Prescott. She expects to keep the shop open on Thursdays and Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Business is not new to Mrs. Washington. "I've been in the clothing business for about 10 years, but I've been involved in business all my life. My relatives had a grocery store and barber shop in Prescott when I was a child and I was involved in it from the time I could hold a pencil and count out penny candy," she said.

More recently Mrs. Washington has sold clothing at trunk shows throughout the country. She also offers a personal shopping service to cater to customers specific needs and for women who either hate to shop or are too busy to shop.

She said she is excited about opening her business "at home" and glad that she can contribute to the local economy. "I want the customers at Lyndia's to feel like they are shopping with a friend who cares about the fashion needs and want them to look their best. After all, my customers are walking advertisements." The shop will carry hats, fashion jewelry, and other accessories, casual wear, and specialize in "dress" clothing.

Mrs. Washington said she chose to have evening and weekend hours because that appears to be when a lot of local people shop. I will extend the hours as need be, she said. The shop will be staffed by local residents.

Mrs. Washington, a journalism professor at Baylor University, said she will still live in Texas and come home on weekends. Her husband, Kennith, is her business advisor and her mother, Helen Miller, will assist with the store in Prescott.

"I'm positive that Prescott is on the grow. I remember when there were about five major retailers downtown and the streets of Prescott were full on Saturdays. I want to see that again. Full Saturdays, and every other day too."
