Dear Editor,

Won't it be a shame when Gurdon no longer has a summer baseball program for its youth? I am afraid that may be exactly what happens unless we have someone come forward and assume two very important positions in the world of "volunteer work" in the Little League baseball program.

You see Baseball Booster Club president for the past several years, and the Little League president and "chief concession stand runner" have both resigned as of this year.

A baseball meeting was called and advertised for last week, and several parents and coaches did attend. Those present were informed of this need for leadership, but no volunteers spoke up. The problem is that time is running out for all the preseason work to get done things such as applying for the charter with the Little League Corporation, gathering information needed to secure insurance through Little League, finding enough coaches, not to mention sponsors, etc., etc., etc.! Much of these things need to completed by March 15 or if and when someone finally does agree to take on these responsibilities, they will have great difficulty starting the summer ball program on time.

I would urge every parent and baseball fan of Gurdon to consider these needs carefully. So much work has gone into the facilities we have in our town. We now have one of the nicest baseball parks in this area, we are just lacking dedicated persons who will take their turn in keeping the ball program going for our kids.

Think About it,

Gary Plyler and Sue Frisby
