Published Wednesday, March 11, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

Mrs. Betty Penny was honored with a surprise birthday party on February 22 in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Karen Young and her children, Kendra, Kendell and Keone Penny.

Mrs. Ruby Henry came to get her for the party. Everyone had parked their cars across the street and in front of other homes in the area. When she walked into the house happy birthday was sung and soul food was served.

The menu consisted of chicken and dressing, baked ham, chitterlings, baked coon with sweet potatoes, fried chicken, turnip greens, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, hot water cornbread, rolls, banana pudding, ice cream and a beautiful birthday cake.

In the middle of the cake in big letters was "Happy Birthday Betty, How Old Are You?" She thought about saying 29, but laughing and looking at her children, grands and great grands and said 39 like Jack Benny always said.

Her children and grandchildren present were Annie Lacy and Anessha; Myron Henry; Karmisha Penny and James of Little Rock; Ricky Dean and Mary Ann of Delight; Mattie Anderson; and the hostesses, Karen Young Kendra, Kendell and Keone Penny.

Others helping celebrate were Harvey McClelland, Fred Hatley, Ronnie Lasken, Gennie V. Cunning-ham, Charles, Lula Mae Roberts, Ronnie Moss, Joyce Marie and husband and Debra Lynn of Texarkana.

Mrs. Penny received beautiful flowers, cards, money and a telephone that she wanted and needed since her old one was worn out.

Monday, February 23, she received beautiful balloons and flowers from Ruthie Sims from Prescott and more cards and money from her sister, Mrs. Annie Hubbard, and her sister-in law, Murthrue Penny, and Barbara Harper.

Mrs. Betty Penny loved everything and thanks God for letting her see another birthday.
