Club NewsPublished Wednesday, March 18, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesTwenty-three members of the Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club met March 12 in the home of Tootsie Dempsey. President Jean Toland presided over the meeting, reading the eye opener, a happy person is a busy person. The devotional reading, "You are Loved," was given by hostess Tootsie Dempsey, who also gave the program on pesticides. The use of pesticides presents a serious health problem if proper procedures are not followed, she said, and they have the potential to cause immediate health effects, such as dermatitis, numbness or nausea, as well as long term effects (production of tumors, genetic changes or blood disorders) to humans. Pesticides have different degrees of toxicity. Those labeled 'Danger' are highly toxic; 'Warning' are moder-ately toxic and 'Caution' labels indicate low toxicity. Always carefully read and follow instructions for using the product and disposing of the container after use, she cautioned. Forty-one turbans for cancer patients were sewn recently at a workshop held at the municipal building. These are given free to those in need of them.
