Classy WomenPublished Wednesday, March 18, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesWe had a visit from Old Man Winter last week, and believe me no one had to tell us it was cold outside. We are not really difficult to please, just give us warm days with the beautiful sunshine (please). We are so thankful for the "coats for kids" that were given to students who needed a coat. It is so good to have a community that meets the needs of others. A big thank you. Mrs. Davies' reading classes have been very busy this nine weeks. The top readers were: Ashley Cariness, first place, as she read 15 books and was awarded $20;Melanie Shults, second place, for reading 13 books she received $10; a three-way tie for third place among T.J. Parker, Amy Stiffler and Trey Rainey with 10 books being read by After drawing a name from those three, T.J. Rainey received $5, while Trey and Amy received candy bars. All winners received certificates. Congratulations to each of you, and a big thank you to Mrs. Davies for creating the interest in reading in her classes. March 16-20, the GMS will have a book donation drive. If you have any children's books that you would like to donate to the GMS reading classes, call Mrs. Davies at 353- 4311, or bring them to the school during parent/teacher conferences Thursday, March 19. We enjoyed USA Takraw, a program from the Bureau of Lectures. Several students and teachers enjoyed being on the team for Hacky Sack, a sport that is growing in popularity and hopefully will be part of the Olympic games in Sydney, Australia, in 2000. After the program, citizen students were honored: fifth grade, Cody Pruitt; sixth grade, Kim Hulan; seventh grade, Camellia Lacy; and eighth grade, Jimmy Plyler. We are always proud of our Citizen students, as they are selected by their teachers for being respect-ful, polite, following the rules, going that 'extra step' in making GMS a place of pride. Academics are not included in the selection. Faculty and staff of the month of march are Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Davies and Mrs. Whitlock. They will accompany the Citizen students and Mr. Alexander for a big pizza lunch. The Spelling Bee, conducted Monday, March 9, found the first place winner Brad Branson and second place winner T.J. Tarpley here at our own Gurdon Middle School. Congratulations! (How did chair get in all of that?) We were saddened to learn of the deaths of T.J. Tarpley's grandfather, Bob Mac Tarpley, and Kelly Runyan's grandmother, Helen Runyan. Just remember that you are in our thoughts. Thursday we will conduct the parent/teachers conference from 2:30 until 7:00 p.m. All report cards will be given out at this time, regardless if fines are still outstanding. School will be dis-missed at 2:00 Thursday. School will also dismiss at 2:00 Friday, March 20. We will be on spring break the week of March 23-27. We are looking forward to a few days off, but Monday, March 30, we will be back and ready to make Classy Moments at GMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
