New Feed Store Opens In GurdonBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, March 18, 1998 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon area farmers and ranchers no longer have to travel far to get the feed their livestock needs. Now, there is a feed store in Gurdon, located where the former grocery store and Capps businesses were. Jarrid Francis has opened Francis Feeds, offering a line of food for cattle, horses, pigs, chickens, fish and dogs, along with salt blocks, water softeners, some veterinary supplies and barbed wire. Francis Feeds is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. A grand opening will be held at the feed store Saturday, March 20, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Francis said. Currently, a limited variety of brands is offered. However, Francis said, once the business gets going and the current inventory has been reduced, plans are to expand the brands of foodstuffs carried. In fact, the 22-year-old business owner asks area farmers and ranchers to tell him the brand of feeds they prefer so he can keep them in stock. At this time, though, Francis Feeds offers only Kendall Feed. But, he said, this is the kind of feed he gives to his own livestock and horses. Running a feed store is something Francis has wanted to do for some time. He said the smell of the feed is something he likes. And, growing up around horses and cows didn't hurt any either. Francis's background should also help him in the business. He has raised cattle, horses, pigs, chickens and dogs, along with having experience at most farm and ranch labor, including breaking and training horses. In his off time, Francis enjoys hunting and fishing, along with working with people. "I'd appreciate everyone's business," he said. "I'd like the customers to tell me what they need in feed so I can get it. I can't offer it if I don't know what they want. I'm offering my services to the public and will do what I can to help them." Along with the aforementioned items, Francis plans to offer 16-foot stock panels for sale. He also has 3,200 feed of 1.25 inch water pipe, with the connectors and glue needing to be sold. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
