Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, March 25, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

Spring Break! We have looked forward to this time of the year and, of course, we will be ready to get back into our routine Monday, March 30.

We welcome two interns, (we use to refer to them as student teachers) in our building.

Mrs. Butler has Joe Chand, from Blevins for several weeks to help him complete his requirements for graduation. He shows great concern for the students and will most likely make an excellent primary school teacher.

Mrs. Smithson is enjoying Mrs. Arnold from Camden for the next few weeks. It is without question that another primary school teacher is in the making.

Both interns are students at Henderson State University and we say welcome and hope you enjoy your visit.

The book donation drive is going pretty well, but just keep in mind if you have any children's books that you do not need, please let Mrs. Davies know and arrangements will be made to pick them up.

I have mention this before, but here it is again. If things seem to be going slow for us, it seems as though we find some little something to get us going again. Well, believe me, we found something big to get us going this time. It seemed as though Wed-nesday's school day was about to come to a close, when all of a sudden a water pipe burst in the boys restroom. Water was gushing with such force, it put "Old Faithful" to shame.

All of a sudden, we had water running freely and fast into Mrs. Smithey's room, down the ramp into Mrs. Roe's and Mrs. Smithson's rooms, and if that was not enough down the stairs into the cafeteria. Well, a call was made immediately to get help as we did not know where to turn the water off. While two or three were mopping as fast as they could to try to keep the flow of water from going on down the hall or into any other rooms, our great "Leader" was seen running down the hall. Everyone just knew that he had found where to turn the water off and was rushing to take care of that. Turn the water off? No way! He (the great leader) was running to get to the bus garage to drive a bus for the afternoon route. (Women and children fend for yourselves.)

Well, desperation was present! Mrs. Green, the bravest little fifth grade teacher in all of the world, found an area to crawl under the building and found a knob of which she turned. The water was off! We did not know that Bryan Watson, one of the maintenance men, was also turning a knob that really did turn the water off. (We are not sure what that little fifth grade teacher turn off.) We are so grateful for the bravery of Mrs. Green as she was entering the "deep down yonder" area of our school just to keep us all from washing away. We may put a phone booth in the building so she can run into that if she needs to make a quick change into her "Superwoman" suit! We feel safe and secure with our hero.

We would like to express our appreciation to Austin Variety Store for giving a calculator and clock to the primary school to be used in a drawing for 'A' students. Also to K&T Clothing for giving Nike socks to the Gurdon Middle School for prizes for 'A' and 'B' students. Calley's Fina, Robbs BP and Woolf's Service Station each gave $10 of gas to the high school students with all A's. Horne's Funeral Home gave ink pens to grades three through 12 for all 'A' and 'B' students and ice cream to the 'A' and 'B' students in grades first and second.

The program of giving special gifts to the students is such a rewarding opportunity for the merchants to let them know how much they appreciate the determination of the students to excel. We appreciate you and thank you so very much.

Mrs. Clark's advance English classes took a trip to Little Rock Thursday to see a play. They enjoyed the outing so much and really enjoyed the play.

The band students attended a contest Thursday in Arkadelphia and did real well. We are proud of all of your hard work.

Beta Club sponsored a basketball tournament. Fifth and sixth graders played Wednesday, and seventh and eighth played their game Friday. The kids had a great time and lots of talent was noticed. Of course we have to say something about the official: "Hey, Coach Hatley, you can really blow that whistle."

Parent/teacher conferences con-ducted Thursday were really good. We had a great number of parents to come. Each parent who came was given a "Free D-Hall Slip" that can be used by their child if they are sent to detention hall, or if they have it when school is out, they can turn it in for a special treat.

We want you to be proud of the accomplishments, even when they are not top, but knowing the best effort was put forth, as you are special to us and we continue to made those Classy Moments at GMS.
