GPS Students Raise Money For St. Jude

Published Wednesday, March 25, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

Students at Gurdon Primary School have once again raised money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis.

This is the 12th year students have participated in the Math-a-than. This years total will be about $3,500.

Cancer kills more children than any other disease. St. Jude is America's leading childhood cancer research center. Its purpose is to provide both medical treatment for desperately ill children and research that will permanently wipe out this deadly disease.

St. Jude treats its patients at no cost to their families and will even provide transportation and lodging if necessary.

Grand prizes were awarded to students who raised the most money.

Krissie Davies, a fourth grader, won first place for the third year in a row. She will receive a boom box radio and $75.

Jessie Woolf, a first grader, won $50 for second place and Railey Williams, a kindergarten student, won $25 for third place.

Mrs. Gatlin's fourth grade room won a pizza party for raising over $1,000. Mrs. Thomas' kindergarten will enjoy an ice cream party and Mrs. Duke's first grade class will have a candy bar party.

Thirty-one students raised over $35 and received a St. Jude's T-shirt.

These students are Candice Purdy, Thom Ross White, Jenna Hurst, Kayla Caldwell, Christie Purdy, Maria Reeves, Codie Golden, Kimberly Buford, Jonathan Benson, Bronson Williams, Haley Green, Zack Martin, Kirby Sandidge, Mario Walker, Yolanda Penney, Cody Caldwell, Jack Woolf, Rachel Reeves, Autumn Prince, De Andra Williams, Allison Anderson, Marco Giles, Natalie Tarpley, Sherrod Williams, Jodie Swayze, Jolee Jester, J.D. Gober, Jaquaya Dixon, Jason Wells, Aaron Austin and Taylor Norman.

Twenty-one students raised over $75 and will receive a T-shirt and a tote bag.

They are Marleigh Williams, Railey Williams, Regan Renfro, Brittney Dickerson, Jessi Woolf, Marena Smithpeters, Kellie Pennington, Joshua Purifoy, Blake Daniels, Sara Boyce, Andre Anderson, Monica Reeves, Corey Daniell, Josh Lockwood, Sean Sporer, Steven Stroder, Krissi Davies, Callie King, Aaron Charles, Brandi Benson and Carolanne Duke.

A big thanks to all of the sponsors for making the St. Jude Math-a-than a huge success, but we especially salute these kids for their hard work.
