GHS Girls State Delegates Named

When Arkansas Girls State convenes at Harding University in Searcy for its 56th session from May 31 through June 5, four Gurdon High School juniors will represent Gurdon.

The students are Rachelle Reece, Amy Ross, Many Shaver and Bethany Cooper.

The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors Girls State. The girls are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character and honesty.

Contributors who are lending their financial support are the Gurdon Rotary Club, C.D. and E. Club, Mr. and Mrs. Austin Capps, Mrs. W.G. Callaway and First State Bank.

Louise Davies, Girls State chairperson and president of the local American Legion Auxiliary, stated that the purpose is to provide citizenship training and to inform them about the duties, privilege and participation in the functioning of their government.

The students will live in mythical cities and elect their own officials and spend one day at the State Capitol in Little Rock.

Reece is the 17-year-old daughter of Ed and Brenda Reece. She has been a cheerleader for five consecutive years and has participated in numerous pageants, including having been selected as Clark County Fair Queen, Gurdon Forest Festival Princess and Gurdon Forest Festival Queen.

She is a member of Beech Street Baptist Church and is an honor roll student. Rachelle is a member of the GHS choir, which recently received superior ratings in the Henderson Choir Festival. She will participate in Close-Up in Washington, D.C., this spring.

Reece has been named to Who's Who's among American high school students and was selected by the student body as "Most School Spirited".

Her hobbies include taking and teaching gymnastics, playing tennis, being a lifeguard and participating in pageants. After graduation, she plans to attend UCA and obtain a degree in child psychology.

Ross is the 16-year-old daughter of Robert and Bonnie Ross. She has been a Go-Devil cheerleader for five years. Her first year as a cheerleader the squad attended the national cheerleading competition in Nashville, Tenn., where she re-ceived seventh in the nation. Last year at cheerleading camp she was nominated for All-American cheer-leader.

Ross is in the high school choir, which recently received superior ratings in the Henderson Choir Festival. In her eighth grade year she received seventh chair in Southwest All-Region competition and was in the top 20 her sopho-more year.

She was recently selected by her class as class favorite. This April she plans to attend Washington, D.C., with the Close-Up group.

Ross attends Beech Street Baptist Church, where she is active in the youth group. Her hobbies include taking and teaching gymnastics, reading and playing tennis. After her senior year, she plans to attend the University of Central Arkansas at Conway.

Shaver is the 17-year-old daught-er of Joe and Debora Shaver and Barbara Shaver. She is a member of Beirne Baptist Church and has been named to Who's Who among American high school students. She participated in M*A*S*H a summer program for students interested in the medical field.

She is a member of the FFA and 4-H Meats Judging Teams and will participate in spring judging contests.

Shaver has been invited as a par-ticipant of Henderson 100 and will spend a week in Washington, D.C., with the Close-Up group. Her plans include the pursuit of a career in the medical field.

Cooper is the 17-year-old daughter of Richard and Rebecca Cooper. Currently she is in the Beta Club, National Honor Society, Student Council and is the junior class president.

She is an honor roll student and was selected to Who's Who among American high school students. Recently she was selected by her peers as one of their class favorites.

Cooper is in the GHS Choir and participated in festival at Henderson, where they received all superior ratings. She also has been in SATB and SSA All-Region choirs. She is a member of New Caney Missionary Baptist Church, where she has participated in church activities, such as Encounter.

This year's school activities include Close-Up and Henderson 100. Her hobbies are watching movies and reading magazines. After she graduates, her plans are to go to a four-year college.
