Conflict Resolution Program Scheduled

Published Wednesday, April 8, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

Taking With TJ Conflict Resolution series is an exciting new educational program to teach second through fourth graders to resolve conflicts with peers without using violence.

Through the program, children learn important skills of managing anger and choosing alternatives to violence, respecting different points of view when trying to resolve a problem and using friendly words, rather than fighting words, to communicate feelings an ideas. The program encourages children to work and play in more caring and cooperative ways, a very important goal in today's culturally-diverse society.

With support from the Hallmark Corporate Foundation, Talking With TJ has been developed by three of the nation's premier youth organ-izations, one of which is 4- H the Extension System's youth develop-ment program.

The organizations were selected to work with the foundation because of its shared commitment to positive youth development and their very different approaches to program delivery. As a result, Talking With TJ is a program resource that can be used with children of diverse backgrounds in many different program settings.

Today's children must be prepared to become responsible citizens in a pluralistic society. In such a society, there is great potential for conflicts based on differences in expectations, values and behaviors.

The skills used to work out problems in Talking With TJ are presented in a multi- cultural context. The video stories have been carefully designed so every child can see someone like himself or herself resolving conflicts in positive, nonviolent ways.

The Clark County 4-H program assistant has scheduled Talking With TJ Conflict Resolution programs with the Gurdon Primary School.

Gurdon Primary School third grade students will receive the program on Teamwork.

The fourth grade students will receive the program on Conflict Resolution.

The Clark County 4-H program is will assist any of the schools in adding this program to other school curriculum. Call 246-2281 for more information.

Anyone interested in joining a 4-H club should contact the Clark County Extension office at 246-2281.
