Those who plan on running in the preferential party primary Tuesday, May 19, have tossed their hats into the political arena.

Surprisingly there are few contested races, though there are several offices open.

In Gurdon, incumbent Mayor Rick Smith is being challenged by political newcomer Danny Paull.

This is the only race in Gurdon being contested, other than a race for justice of the peace for district 8. This race had Larry Roy Thomerson running for a seat he previously held. The other candidate is Christopher L. Dixon.

Gurdon City Marshal David Childres is unopposed this election, as is Frank Plasek, who is seeking the spot for Caddo Township Constable.

The only other Gurdon resident involved in a political race is Wonda Clark, one of three hopefuls for Circuit/Chancery Clerk. Linda Hill and Pamela D. King are also seeking this office.

Two races for JP are being contested. In district 1 Roger Wingfield is running as a democrat, while Jonathan B. Huber seeks the post as a member of the GOP. In district 8, Orville E. Buck and Billy C. Kirksey are vying for the office.

Three candidates are after the position as Clark County Judge. Incumbent Grady Runyan is being challenged by Ron Daniell and Floyd "Buddy" Manning.

From there, no races have more than one candidate.

Clark County Sheriff Troy Tucker will retain his office unless someone files as an independent candidate later on.

For the JP races, Dot Curry is alone in district 2; R.H. "Dick" Batson will represent district 3; Albert Neal will continue in district 4; with Bill Moorman staying in district 5; Bill Conine remains in district 6, while John J.B. Howard is in district 7; and Mike Cox will be in district 11.

Wanda H. Knight will retain the office of County Assessor, with Tandy L Hill staying on as municipal judge. Judy Beth Hutcherson will also be the county treasurer again.

There are no contested races in Whelen Springs either.

Art Cooper will remain the city's mayor, while the alderman will be Odie Young (ward 2); Gertrude Cooper (ward 3); Edith Pierce (ward 1); and Harold Gulledge (ward 4).

Those planning to run for council positions in Gurdon will be doing so as independents and must file petitions.
