Curley Wolves Strike Cobras In Homecoming WinPublished Wednesday, October 20, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayunePrescott ran away from the Fountain Lake Cobras Friday night to win 38-0 to make homecoming sweeter than it already was. The Curley Wolves are now ranked in the number one spot with De Queen and Fordyce with 3-1 records. Nashville and Fouke are tied in the second position with 2-2 records and Fountain Lake, Bismarck and Mena are third with 1-3 records. While Prescott was charming the Cobras, De Queen was beating the Redbugs, 26-7. If the season should end today, this means De Queen is in first place, Prescott is second and Fordyce is second. Unfortunately, Prescott won't find out how tough the Redbugs are until November 4. Calvin Flemons tore up the turf, rushing for 120 yards and scoring four touchdowns Friday against the Cobras. Terry Woodley rushed for 63 yards and one TD. Quarterback Josh Bullock passed to Andrew Fellows for another score. The Curley Wolves scored once in the first and second periods, and twice in the third and fourth periods. Flemons scored on runs of 36, 2, 2 and 59. Woodley's score also came on a 59-yard run. Bullock's TD pass was good for 45 yards. Prescott's defense was also active, intercepting two passes and recovering two fumbles from the Cobras. Prescott turned the ball over four times as well. Prescott's first possession ended on a turnover. On their next possession, the Curley Wolves faked on punt on fourth and 11. The ball was snapped to Flemons, who gained 13 yards and a first down at the Fountain Lake 31. The series finally ended on the 11 on downs. The Cobras had to punt on fourth and four with Brad Harris returning the kick 13 yards to the Fountain Lake 37-yard line. A five-yard penalty moved the ball back to the 42 for the Wolves, then Bullock had to run instead of passing, but gained six on the play. Next Flemons came out of a tailback trap play to out-distance everyone for the score. The point after attempt was missed. The Cobras came out passing from their 30 and for the second straight week, Mark Jones stepped in for the interception. Bullock missed Ronnie Nolen with a pass, then he missed Fellows. On the third play Bullock was sacked for an eight-yard loss that ended the quarter. However, Bullock got the first down on the first play of the second period when he came back to Fellows. The play netted 27 yards down to the nine. Fred Hopson gained six on the first play, then he managed one yard on the second. Flemons went in from the two for the TD. Again the point after try was missed for the score to remain 12-0. Fountain Lake then controlled the ball for the remainder of the half. Thanks to a holding penalty, a touchdown by the Cobras from the one was called back. After three tries. The Cobras were still six yards away. On fourth and goal to go from the six quarterback Chris Castleberry was hit and fumbled the ball with Prescott recovering at the 16. Castleberry kicked off to Prescott to begin the second half. This was his only kick-off all night. Prescott had to punt on fourth down, thanks in part to a holding penalty on the first play of the half. Fountain lake made one first down then on first and 10 from the Prescott 44, Castleberry had to come out of the pocket and run. He fumbled when hit with the Wolves taking over on their 41-yard line. Woodley finished a sweep play that went for 59 yards and a TD, giving the Wolves an 18-0 lead after a two-point conversion failed. On their next possession, the Cobras had to punt again. This time Prescott went after Tra Dougan, the punter, getting a block. Keon Sockwell tried to run the recovered ball in, but he was stopped at the three. Flemons was elected to take the ball on the first play and managed one yard. On the second play Bullock handed it to him again, getting the score up the middle. The kick by Sockwell was good, making the score 25-0 with 5:06 left in the third period. Each team exchanged possession the remainder of the quarter with Fountain Lake punting; Bullock being intercepted; Fountain Lake fumbling and Brian Joseph recovering the ball for the Wolves; Prescott punting (a bad that one that only went four yards); and then the quarter ending with Fellows intercepting Castleberry and setting up another TD with the ball only 39 yards away from the goal. But look at these penalties: on the first play Woodley gained five yards, then the Wolves were penalized 15 yards for clipping, then again, nullifying another great run by Flemons. These 30 yards put the Wolves so far in the hole, they couldn't see daylight. They were now on their 37-yard line, 63 yards away from the goal. But on the next play, Bullock connected with Woodley, who managed to get to the Fountain Lake 45 before he was stopped. On third and 16 Bullock then hit Fellows around the 10-yard line. Fellows went in for the score. The point after kick by Sid Giles was good to make the score 32-0. Once more the two clubs began their ritual of exchanges: first the Cobras, who turned the ball over on downs; then Prescott had to punt; ditto Fountain Lake; and then Rico Hopper lost the handle on the ball with the Cobras recovering. Fountain Lake managed two first downs before failing at the Prescott 22 when Rueben Palmer fumbled while trying to get one yard for the first down. On Prescott's first play the ball was given to Joseph, who gained 20 yards for the first down at the 41. The ball was then given to Flemons, who knew where the goal was. The point after kick was missed for the final score to remain 38-0. Offensively, the Curley Wolves had a net of 372 yards with Bullock passing for 109 in 11 attempts. He had five to fall incomplete and one that was intercepted. Castleberry, in the meantime, attempted 17 passes, seven in the fourth period, for a net of 24 yards. He had 11 incomplete and two intercepted. Fountain Lake's backs only rushed for 78 yards. The Wolves were penalized 13 times for 120 yards. The Cobras were penalized five times for 30 yards. Another big test for the Curley Wolves will be this Friday night when they host the Mena Bearcats. Just because the Bearcats are 1-3 in conference play doesn't mean they won't be ready for the Wolves. The time for so many mistakes must end. Just how many TD's have been called back this season because of penalties? Because of mistakes, the Hope Bobcats defeated the Wolves. Ditto Gurdon. The Wolves lost to De Queen, but it should have been another victory for Prescott. The defense must wrap up their opponents to keep them from scoring as Bell and Love did. Incidently, Bell and Love were the key players against Fordyce last week. However, Prescott's defense is good and it can stop any team in the conference as it did Nashville. Their efforts must be applied proper and with determination. After all there are three games left. Last week the Bearcats lost 33 to 20 to Fouke and Fouke is the team Prescott plays next weekthere. In other games of interest last week, Nashville smothered Bismarck 34-0; Hope took a 35-13 pounding from Lake Hamilton; Gurdon trounced Lewisville 40-6; and Mineral Springs beat Foreman 28-6. Three teamsNashville, De Queen and Fordycefrom the 7AAA Conference are in the top 10 in Class AAA in the state. Nashville is sixth, De Queen is seventh and Fordyce is eighth. Nashville and De Queen are 5-2 overall and Fordyce has a 4-2-1 record. Prescott is 4-3 overall and not rankedyet. In Class AA Mineral Springs is fifth in the state with a 6-1 record. The Hornets' only loss was to Prescott. Gurdon is not ranked with a 5-2 overall record. Neither is Hope, which was picked to win their conference before the season began. Game time Friday night is 7:30. Fans should go out to support the Curley Wolves in their last home game of the regular season. Not only can you see a lot of good action, but an outstanding performance by the Prescott Wolf Pride marching band is given the fans at halftime.
