PRESCOTT 3Published Wednesday, April 15, 1998 in the Nevada County PicayuneBISMARCK 5 Ricky Hammrick was tagged for five runs in six innings against the Lions. He gave up eight hits, walked one and fanned three of the 29 batters faced to go 3-1 on the year. J. Brawley was the winning pitcher, recording 14 K's against Prescott batters. The game opened with four Wolves going to the plate and three being retired on strikes. Heath Ingram walked. The Lions fared no better in their half the frame, as four went up and three returned to the dugout. The other reached on an error. Neither team was able to mount an offensive attack in the second either, though Bismarck did get two men on. Inning number three saw each team score once. Ben Jones got the Wolves on the board with his fifth homer of the season. The lead, though, was short lived as the Lions answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Williamson opened with a single, advanced to second on a grounder by M. Brawley. J. Brawley walked and a fly ball by Collie brought Williamson in to tie the score at 1-1. Prescott added two in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Al Johnston and Jarod Yates walked to put runners at first and second. Justin Jernigan reached on an error that allowed Johnston to score. Seth Collins lofted a sacrifice fly to bring Yates across, but Jernigan was stranded as Tony Overton and Brent Jordan both were fanned. Bismarck scored four in the bottom as the final offensive salvos for both teams were fired. Riggan singled, but was nailed when Doss hit into a fielder's choice. Morris also hit into a fielder's choice that saw Doss tagged at second. Then the two-out rally began for Bismarck. Chapman reached on an error, while Williamson singled to load the bases. M. Brawley cleared the paths with a grand slam. The next three innings were a battle of pitching staffs as neither offense was able to score. Coach Steve Crow said Hammrick's pitching was one of the game's few highlights, as he hurled well enough to win. "He had good control and only gave up one walk," Crow said. Jones's homer was the other highlight. The junior varsity game saw the Wolves gain a measure of revenge with a 6-1 win in three innings. Jones was the winning pitcher, going two innings, while Yates finished the game. Heath Duke doubled and scored twice in the JV game, while Hammrick singled and scored, as did Brad Harris. Brent Jordan singled, while Gabe Morman and Evan Webb each scored runs. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
