Anger Seminar Held

Published Wednesday, October 20, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

Tuesday night, October 12, The Boys To Men and Girls To Women (BM-GW) sponsored an anger management seminar at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Prescott.

State Rep. Robert White of District 37 from Camden, was the guest speaker. White presented a very innovative and practical approach to anger management for youth and adults.

Some of the areas discussed were:

  • Keeping anger under control. You cannot avoid anger completely, but you can keep it from getting out of hand. Anger that is out of control can lead to heart problems, high blood pressure, headaches and digestive problems, White said. You also cannot think or reason well.
  • Ignoring anger does not work. You must deal with your anger when it occurs.
  • Anger is a powerful emotion. It has many causes, he said, such as stress, rejection, worry, frustration, loss, annoyance and feeling threatened
  • Expressing anger. Don't hold on to angry feelings let them go.
In dealing with your anger, calm down, don't avoid the issue, understand your motives and get help, he said.
  • Keep anger from taking over. Try the following: humor, physical activities, rest and relaxation and hobbies to keep anger from taking over.
  • Why learn about anger? Knowing how to recognize and express anger appropriately can make a big difference in your life. Handling anger poorly can hurt you in many ways: damaged relations, trouble at work, problems at home, health problems, legal trouble and many others.
  • Handling anger well can help you work through difficult problems and to motivate yourself to reach goals. Promote growth in your relations, getting along with teacher, parents, peers and others.
A total of 55 persons were in attendance. There were 21 mentees, 17 mentors as well as parents and others.
